The Senate GOP leader is vowing to squeeze Democrats with a vote on Brett Kavanaugh right before the midterms if they dont back down on their demand for documents.

Mitch McConnell has a warning for Democrats demanding copious documents on Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh: Be careful what you wish for.
The Senate majority leader privately told senior Republicans on Wednesday that if Democrats keep pushing for access to upwards of a million pages in records from President Donald Trumps high court pick, hes prepared to let Kavanaughs confirmation vote slip until just before Novembers midterm elections, according to multiple sources.
Delaying the vote past September would serve a dual purpose for McConnell, keeping vulnerable red-state Democrats off the campaign trail while potentially forcing anti-Kavanaugh liberals to swallow a demoralizing defeat just ahead of the midterms. Senators said McConnell believes the Democratic base will be deflated if they raise hopes of defeating Kavanaugh only to lose just days before the election.
Democrats have no intention of backing down in their call for maximum transparency about Kavanaughs record, but the GOP is betting that theyll start to sweat the Supreme Court timeline as the summer wears on.
To me, its in their best interest to have that vote done for a lot of their red-state senators who are facing their voters, GOP Conference Chairman John Thune said.

(25,243 posts)Waiting it out till then actually works both ways and could hurt the Repugs if it happens just before the midterms.
This is a game of chicken and McConnell knows it.

(33 posts)Get it in the Congressional record that McConnell denied Marrick Garland his rightful place on the Supreme Court, refused to let a Bi-partisan denouncement of Russian Hacking in the 2016 Election become public, and his desperately trying to ram through an extremist conservative in a bullying threatening manner. No more Senate courtesy and politeness!

(2,785 posts)The longer the vote is delayed the better the chances are that this nominee is defeated. Red State Democrats are already polling way better than repukes would've thought a year ago and if the polling holds in Oct. there is already one vulnerable republican up for reelection and possibly could be 2 by then if trend in Texas continues. So turtle would be keeping Heller and Cruz off the campaign trail too? Finally turtle is full of sh*t. If he were assured he already had 50 votes he would've rammed this Supreme court nominee through yesterday.

Trump is a Russian asset and a traitor. He shouldn't have the ability to appoint any judges for that matter.
