If our leaders did not have the foresight to see how a secret meeting with Putin would be perceived?

How could we expect them to have the foresight to see how a military parade with Putin as a guest would be perceived? In Russia and other parts of the world, he might as well be reviewing the Russian military. It would be perceived as an American surrender. It would be disastrous.

At the very best, it would be seen as an unwilling military marching in front of a dictator and a wannabe dictator. Putin would still be seen as the victor - not Donald Trump. He would be seen as a weakling, willing to surrender our sovereignty to Vladimir Putin.

It would be worse than Helsinki. Putin would be seen as the victor and America would be seen as the loser.
