Don't these morons care one iota about the environment? For their kid's/grandkid's sake?

(10,156 posts)Mind you this morning someone ended up hitting our fence and then a power pole behind our house. No electricity for 7 hours and by the time the power was back on, our house was an oven

(17,045 posts)It's unbearable right now! Rain would be welcome... its not looking too good right now. 10 to 20% usually means a bust!

(102,236 posts)I've got a system down so that it is bearable. But, once it gets to or exceeding 100, even the films I put on all my windows, the blinds and black out curtains on south & west facing windows can not keep the indoor temp below 90. Fortunately I have lots of fans and a freezer full of cold packs to cool me down. It's cooler in the basement, but that really only helps for the dog. By about 10 or 11 PM it starts feeling a bit more comfortable.
Ready for this hot spell to break!

At least it isn't humid, I guess.

(6,931 posts)and 90s here in Seattle all next week. Too hot for me. I cannot imagine living where you guys live. 105 is unlivable. Do what you can to stay cool, and if you have pets, keep a close eye on them.

(6,931 posts)but I bet they'd hightail it back indoors in a sec if they touched the hot sidewalk! I try to keep the bathroom cool by filling the tub with ice water, and that's where my cat likes to hang out on the hottest days.

(11,457 posts)From the heat, highly recommend a break if you can but in Texas you have to go far.
I live in southern Oregon, heat wave its been high 90s or 100s for weeks, this coming week 100-103 all week.
I am down in Santa Rosa at a nice 85 and went to ocean 68 yesterday. Such a breath of fresh cool air. It cools down at night here.
At home its not the heat thats the problem, I cant go out because of smoke from forest fires. I am not getting enough exercise and neither is my dog. I throw a ball in the house.
I feel trapped inside when home so this trip is wonderful!
My other daughter from San Antonio is here too enjoying a break for a week.

(63,221 posts)It's been very seasonable here in Boston - 70's and 80's, but dry and breezy. Gets down into the 60's at night. I like it cooler, but I can deal with this. Hope you get a reprieve soon. I at least hope that you have AC.
Texasgal
(17,045 posts)I would never be able to survive a Texas Summer without!
I have some family in Marblehead.. no AC in those homes! I was always confused when I would visit! I am a native Austinite, AC is needed here!
smirkymonkey
(63,221 posts)AC is a must even here in New England. I am lucky that I don't have to pay for it in my apartment building (I live in a condo bldg. and for some reason heat and AC are paid for). I would die without it. I am one of those people who likes the room to be about 65 degrees or lower. I don't think I could ever deal with the heat in Texas! You are very brave!
oldtime dfl_er
(6,931 posts)with ideas on how to stay cool? I'm in a 3rd floor apartment with no AC and pretty lousy crosswind, and it can get sweltering in here.

(2,226 posts)A light weight kitchen (bar cloth) wet and drape it where I was feeling hot. Also hanging wet cloths in front of window.

(38,000 posts)It's warm at night and cool during the day. It got to 105 and still I spent the whole day with the windows open + ceiling fan and stayed cool the whole time. Now that it's dark and the temp is down to the low 80s it's getting warm and I'll have to turn on the air conditioner.
Don't get me wrong I'm super glad about it but it's strange.

(25,475 posts)No AC, using the poor person's AC -- cold wet towels and fans. Every day some deaths and a couple thousand taken to hospital for heat stroke (Japan). As of Thursday total of 10,000 taken to hospital and 30 deaths during this heat wave. It shouldn't surprise me that school sporting events are still held during the day under that merciless sun, then the inevitable footage on the evening news of ambulances hauling collapsed kids away. There's a great deal more awareness of heat stroke than there used to be, but still people seem to drop like flies.
Silver lining, usually it takes vigorous physical activity for a certain length of time to work up a good sweat, but in this heat if I wash the dishes or do the vacuuming, within minutes I'm dripping wet. Makes me feel like I've worked out without the actual work out.

(60,010 posts)I have a friend in Dallas area who told me she gets messages from the power company to set her thermostat at 85!!! in order to avoid power interruptions.
She said the heat index today was over 110. But at least it is not Houston, one of the most humid places I have ever been in August.

(31,384 posts)for reducing the indoor temp about 20 degrees below the outdoor temp. That means if it's in the 90's outside, the system will easily handle keeping the inside in the 70's. If you're dealing with an outdoor temp of 105, then it makes sense the power company would advise 85. You get hundreds of thousands of systems running constantly to reduce indoor temp to the 70's when it's 105 outside, something's gotta' give.

(25,285 posts)It depends on what you are doing too...
Shopping?
Walking?
Gardening?
Outdoor events?
It seems for each degree above 95, we feel it. At 105, I begin to feel it when I go shopping, whereas at 95 shopping is no big deal.
I hate outdoor events in Texas summers. 104 seems to be my tipping point for my daily hike. But even 95 sucks cuz nothing outdoors is enjoyable at that point anyway.
108 is really bad. One of those days to stay indoors. And it sucks cuz all the plants will need extra water.
We're forecast for 102 today and 105 tomorrow. San Antonio has a heat advisory.
