So, at a gathering of progressive Dems last night, the conversation got around to voter suppression.
But, instead of the usual weeping and gnashing of teeth over voter ID laws and Repub purges of voters roles, this idea was a table turner.
A Dem woman married to a GOP man said she has a plan that will (legally) mean her husband wont be voting while she still will.
Shes going to tell him that she has mapped out time in their busy schedules for them to go vote at a particular time together late in the day on Election Day.
However, She plans to vote in the early voting period a week before Election Day and just not mention that to her husband.
Then, on Election Day at the appointed time that they planned that morning to go vote together, she plans to manufacture a minor crisis at the house that he needs to come home for.
She will call her husband and say, I know we are supposed to go vote now, but were just not going to be able to. And, our votes would just cancel each others out anyway.
I thought this was a great idea.
What if all Dems with GOP spouses, significant others, family members did this same thing?
A little sneaky, yes, but so what? What do you think? Would you do it?

(10,870 posts)If he never asked her if she already voted.
Even so, if thats the worst lie in their relationship, Id be surprised.
And, the end result is a good one.
Lying to Republicans about voting doesnt bother me at all.

(44,973 posts)You are blaming someone being lied to (actively), as she claims they will go vote together for not figuring out he is being lied to.

(58,785 posts)The Republicans have become the party of systematic dishonesty, wrong deeds, and betrayal. This wife's behavior leads me to guess she is not so different from her husband as might be assumed from their official affiliations.
I could not and would not be married to the kind of person who'd support what Trump is and stands for and/or for what the Republican Party has become. But this one can.

Republicans play by Machiavellian rules. We don't win if Ann Landers is our battle plan.

(36,053 posts)Did you read how VA restructured its voting and that's how the Democrats, with McAuliffe, won in 2014. Everyone said that system should be the national model, then everyone moved on and forgot about it.
Granted, honest structuring and non-partisan personnel of voting will be an uphill battle, but it's been done.
What is suggested here is absolutely not our only option.

(43,146 posts)Honesty is only part of the equation. The amounts of money are obscene, the special interests behind the ideology are manipulative. No one is saying let the people decide because they can't and are easily manipulated. Dishonesty is not often punished at the ballot box. So parties will do what they can get away with, or push until public opinion pushes back, which it rarely does against Republicans because they control so much of the media narrative. They lead the public, and the public is easily led. It's like trying to break into Fox News with a liberal platform.
When you get the other 49 states to restructure their voting without winning elections first, email me. I'd love to read that outcome. Democrats winning an honest election would mean sanity had overwhelmed the right wing fringe infrastructure. Until external events intervene - depression, war, panic - elections are won by counting votes, and sometimes we don't even do that honestly.
But I applaud your ethics. I just don't think it will lead change our direction a lot.

(36,053 posts)number. I'm sure everyone here has heard of that philosophy, which can be implemented as principle and method.
You can't compromise democracy. It's the voice, well recorded and represented -- when it's not chiseled away by expedience of con men and capitalists -- of The People.
When you do, you're no better than Putin, who runs on the 'ends justify the means' method in his federation. Means is covered up by some "show of democracy," like a parliament, or, when that's scorned by the people, force of civilian 'guards' or military guns and money.
And don't leave the restructuring of the other 49 states up to me. That's exactly why this party fails. It doesn't look at best practices that will win those other 49 states.
Yeah, pouring clean water into a bucket full of dirty water doesn't make it clean, but pour enough in, long enough, and it does.

(6,254 posts)assume that 99.9% of DU readers would realize it wasnt a call for DV. I guess I should have used the stupid sarcasm emoji. So for anyone who read my post as a call to action, please dont hit your significant other over the head with a bat. As a criminal defense attorney I can tell you that in NJ that will get you 5-10 years New Jersey State prison. And anyone who read that post and was offended, you need to get off DU and get a grip on reality. But I also caution, that our fellow citizens on the far-right with their extremist view may actually resort to violence to prevent Dems from voting, so be prepared. And if you live with one of these righties, the night before the midterm elections I suggest you sleep with one eye open and hide the guns, knives and bats.

(10,870 posts)But, let me give some of you a hard truth.
If you live in most red states (especially Southern ones), most white straight males are Republicans.
So, for a white straight woman who will only date a white straight male, theres a limited group of Democrats to choose from (especially in rural areas).
Some women who arent real political or that lean Democratic lie to their husbands about politics or just dont talk about it to get along. That makes their lives more manageable, they have told me.
