On Saturday evening, Hillary Clinton appeared on stage at an outdoor music and cultural festival in New York City and vowed to help reunite immigrant families with the children who were kidnapped by the Trump administration.
Im going to be tweeting about this in the days to come, but if any of you work for an airline please direct message me because these families will need vouchers and discounted tickets to be reunited over these thousands of miles, she told a large crowd at New York Citys OZY Fest on Saturday evening.
She was referring to the children who were forcibly separated from their families on Donald Trumps orderers earlier this summer. More than 3,000 kids some younger than five years old were kept in caged facilities by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. After widespread public outcry and several court orders Trump backtracked on the policy and his administration was forced to begin reuniting children with their parents.
But so far, the Department of Homeland Security which oversees ICE has willfully dragged their feet in reunited children. Despite a federal judge demanding that the youngest abductees be reunited by July 10, the administration took two more days to comply with the order. And even then, nearly half of the children in question 46 of the 103 covered by the court order remained separated, with the administration claiming they were ineligible for reunification for a myriad of different reasons.

(18,037 posts)My husband is an FDNY 9/11 survivor whose company was first due at the WTC. He worked rescue and then recovery on the pile and volunteered for months for detail at the Staten Island dump where the debris had been transported, sifting through it for remains, personal identification, and mementos, anything to give any family a little bit of closure.
Well, he got sick afterwards, but his symptoms and illness were not among those covered by the supplemental insurance guidelines Congress had put in place for the 9/11 first responders. We had three kids at home and a mortgage. One medication alone was costing us $800 a month.
It was HRC who worked with legislators to ensure that those who had fallen through the cracks in coverage were included in free, ongoing medical monitoring at the finest hospitals in NY. She worked with pharmaceutical companies to provide medication free or at cost. She saved my family from hardship, and my hero husband is, to this day, convinced that she saved his life. The doctors who give him such good care would probably agree.
And that's why we'll always be with First Lady, Senator, Secretary of State, Presidential Nominee, Citizen Activist, and Feminist Icon Hillary Clinton.

(18,037 posts)HRC's efforts and successes (and the start of my husband's medical monitoring and treatment) were previous to this when she was a senator from New York.
HRC was SOS in 2010, not a member of the do-nothings in Congress who had to be dragged across the finish line after being publicly shamed by Stewart, not once, but twice.

(83,319 posts)I love Jon Stewart. He made a difference and shamed Congress into action.
That does not take away from what Hillary did for people like Lapucelle and her husband.

(32,640 posts)make it into law. Effective lawmakers are the ones who can work well with other legislators to make progressive ideas into actual policy.
There is a big difference in the roles of popular culture and legislators.
That's important to remember.

(295,899 posts)as a Senator contributed to helping your husband and everyone who needed it.. and Jon Stewart's invaluable involvement too. You and your Husband WERE THERE.
I can imagine how grateful you were/are to then Senator Clinton, Jon Stewart, and everyone else who fought the bloody fascists in Congress who wanted to block any help at all to the First Responders!
My BIL was a Paramedic from upstate NY who went down to help with the cleanup.

(16,919 posts)and thanks to your husband for his service. I am in complete awe of the bravery of the FDNY as Im sure the whole country is.
I remember that 9/11 survivor at the Convention and how much she said HRC helped her. Thanks for the first-hand account of your experiences, also.
