Canada brews first cannabis beer

Scientists in a small Ontario laboratory are testing enzymes and experimenting with fermentation. Their techniques are not new, but their focus is a first. They are developing what is being described as the world’s first beer brewed from cannabis.

They say it hits you fast.

With Canada legalizing weed, it most certainly will affect our northern border with them. I am sure the current regime is already planning. It will be another border like Mexico. Can't build a wall though, it is 1000's of miles.

smoke good pot?

Good hops serve a purpose for beer.

Good pot serves a purpose that doesn't need the beer.

I think that is a good reason to wonder.

Beer is not beer without malt.

My husband has been brewing beer for over a decade.

One of the homebrew club we are members of tends to be very experimental. Another tends to be more traditional. A few of our homebrew friends have gone on to become head brewers.

Both are members of the Cannabaceae family.

It's likely cannabis shares many of the same properties that makes hops useful in brewing.

Hops weren't originally added to beer simply for the flavor, they increased the reliability of the brewing process.

Before hops became the standard, other plants (called gruits) were used, including medicinal herbs.

Brewing with hops produces the desired bitterness, and dry pitching hops during fermentation produces the 'nose' and flavor.

And there is a buzz in the brewing realm: pot flavors and smells can complement hops:

Lagunitas Brewing Co. last week (Aug 2017) released its SuperCritical Ale, a hoppy beer that is brewed with terpenes, aromatic compounds of essential oils that are extracted from some plants, including cannabis and hops. The brew, available only in select California locations for a limited time, contains no THC, the chemical that triggers psychoactive effects.

.................................

In an interesting departure from beer, A Lagunitas Brewing Co press release announced last month an 'IPA-inspired' hopped sparkling water infused with THC:

Lagunitas Brewing Company, makers of beers like the 420-nodding Waldos' Special Ale and SuperCritical, a non-psychoactive beer made with cannabis terpenes, has announced it's officially getting into the cannabis game for real. Its new venture is an IPA-inspired sparkling water infused with THC.

Per a press release, the beverage, called Hi-Fi Hops, is a collaboration with CannaCraft's AbsoluteXtracts (also a collaborator on SuperCritical). It will be available in two dosages: one with 10 mg of THC and the other with 5 mg of THC and 5 mg of CBD.

I drink beer for the flavor profile of grain, malt and hops. Additives don't make it better.

The local brewery there had a hemp beer back in the 90's.

It was only okay. Not the worst beer but definitely not the best. Hemp is for getting high not drunk.
