Trump's job approval stable, but gets low marks on trade, immigration and Russia: NBC News-WSJ poll

Fewer than four in 10 American voters approve of Donald Trump’s handling of foreign trade policy, treatment of immigrant families at America’s southern border, and relations with Russia, a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll has found.

The survey, conducted last week as Trump concluded an international trip by meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, showed those controversies haven’t yet harmed his overall popularity. The 45 percent who approved of his job performance, compared to 52 percent who disapproved, represented a slight uptick since June.

That brings Trump’s popularity more in line with those of his Oval Office predecessors, after he recorded historic lows for a new president in 2017. One major asset: by 50 percent to 34 percent, voters approve his handling of the strong economy.

But the president’s setbacks on policy flash-points that have emerged in recent months are adding to political uncertainty as mid-term elections this fall grow closer.

By a margin of roughly two to one, 26 percent to 51 percent, voters disapprove Trump’s handling of relations with Russia. A 45 percent plurality says Trump is inappropriately friendly with Putin, compared to 29 percent who say he is not. By a similar 46 percent to 38 percent margin, voters said Special Counsel Robert Mueller investigation into Russia’s involvement in the 2016 election should continue.

On trade, voters disapprove of Trump’s policies by a 45 percent to a 38 percent margin. Roughly half say Trump’s tariffs will raise consumer prices and hurt the average American, while only one quarter say they will protect jobs and help the average person.

of people are indicted in the russiangate probe and yet his base doesn't seem to care.

Treason was committed against this country.

Friends, the only way we could peal 5-10% of this base off is if he started a depression. Kind of like 2008...

thing holding this moron afloat, but his combined average of (just under 42%) is still atrocious. With an economy this bullish, a more competent POTUS would be sitting on 55-60% approval ratings. Keep that in mind.

he's boasting of mediocre jobs numbers like they're the best thing since sliced bread and nobody is challenging him on it - In 2017, the economy created a little under 2 million jobs, the worst annual total since 2011 when we were still recovering from the Great Bush Recession. However, Trump was bragging about jobs last year and now this year like they were the best numbers ever.

Wage growth is down as well compared to the last 2 years of Obama, and even the meager wage gains are offset by rising gas prices and skyrocketing healthcare costs (Now that Trump has gutted Obamacare, costs are projected to increase 90% over the next 3 years)

That's the problem. We needed the midterm to be held during late 2017, when the approval rating was lowest. Since late 2017 the plot looks like a stock market graph...upticks and downticks but overall a significant rise.

He is like Teflon. He gets away with things that would be career ending for most. I hoped we would get congress back but now I’m not sure. Almost half the country it’s batshit crazy and then a high percentage of the others don’t care. I was at the beauty shop on Virginia primary day and not a single person there voted. They think it does not matter. One person said as long as he has a job he does not care. Others agreed with him. Same attitude as 2016. If that happens again, we lose..

Our candidates need to stay focused on the issues because that is what most voters still care about. The resistance burns over the treason, which is fine and right. It motivates us all to work our asses off for Democratic victories in November. But our candidates must stress the issues.

It's because they are so shameless that they are so effective.

Conversely, Democrats are lacking in this area.
