Jason Spencer, a Republican state representative in Georgia, found himself on the wrong end of a Sacha Baron Cohen prank that aired Sunday night on Showtime. It was the second episode of Who Is America? Mr. Cohens latest foray into duping unsuspecting participants into saying embarrassing things.
But Mr. Spencers segment was one of the most humiliating yet to air on the show.
Mr. Cohen was playing a character named Erran Morad, an Israeli antiterrorism expert who, in the first episode, fooled several current and former lawmakers and gun-rights advocates into expressing support for arming young children. In Sunday nights episode, the Morad character persuaded Mr. Spencer to take part in what he believed was antiterrorism training.
For Mr. Spencer, it went downhill from there. In a series of wince-inducing scenes, Mr. Cohen got him to yell a racial epithet and drop his pants on camera by telling him that those tactics would scare terrorists away.

(7,614 posts)Seems like that kind of behavior would greatly increase his popularity with the state's voters. Not with me, but I'm atypical of most Georgians.

(1,622 posts)and are seriously "surprised anyone in Georgia would condemn Spencer for his act"?
Come on, at least half the city would not only condemn him, they'd probably have few qualms about kicking him right in his racist ass - and deservedly so.
Just sayin'...

(58,785 posts)all expect church behavior from themselves and their reps. They'd no more yell racial epithets in public than they'd drive dirty cars.
Of course, there is tremendous dissonance between the intense dishonesty that allows them to maintain their blood-red political beliefs and their insistence on dignity and appearance of probity in public. Those in our town for years rejected an annual KKK parade from a vestigial little group in true revulsion but continue to support Trump even as frightened, miserable children continue to be held in cages away from their parents.
Nothing like the ability to compartmentalize reality as needed to make all positions possible.

(8,774 posts)Spencer had his pants pulled down and was trying to strike Cohen with is butt in an "anti-terrorism" method. There were other clips with some red necks in Kingman AR for a faux public meeting about a mosque coming to Kingman and anther clip with Dick Cheney. Talk about fools.
