TACOMA, Wash. (KFGO) - A federal judge says convicted killer Leonard Peltier can sue the state of Washington for removing his paintings from a state-sponsored art exhibit.
Peltier filed a federal lawsuit that claims his free speech rights were violated when four of his paintings were removed from a Native American Heritage event.
Court documents say state officials removed the art after at least three complaints were received. Two of the complaints came from former FBI agents.
A federal judge in Tacoma, Washington says Peltier "has raised a genuine issue of fact as to whether removing his paintings violated his First Amendment rights." Other claims Peltier filed against the state were dismissed.
Peltier is serving life in prison for the murders of two FBI agents on South Dakota's Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
