Women must realize that any GOP nationwide ban on abortion would include access to birth control itself. Because the churches believe that any interference with conception is murder they want to ban all family planning practices except complete abstinence or abstinence during fertile times. And what they intend is serious business.
Women and any one assisting abortion would be subject to prosecution and prison. Even life or the death penalty would be on the table. They want personhood laws found constitutional at the national level.
And they would go farther and even criminalize sex outside of marriage. Cohabitation would be illegal like it was in earlier times. Miscarriages would be looked at with suspicion and investigated. Women would be subject to monitoring to make sure they did do anything to risk their pregnancies. And I am sure there would be many other horrors.
The most extreme elements of the RW Christian movement want to make marriages a covenant. They want marriage insoluble and divorce banned by law.
Making the handmaid's tale a reality is their wildest dream. They now have a court where they could install a 6-3 or 7-2 anti contraception majority. Remember we have some ultra conservative Catholic judges on the court.

(10,602 posts)Latest POTUS pick is the most dangerous of all. And there is likely to be another pick in the fairly near future. Ginsberg is somehow holding on but who knows how long.

(10,602 posts)They want 9 justices just like Scalia or Alito. Even Roberts is too liberal for some GOPPERS.

(99,710 posts)Cases that deal with cohabitation and contraception would have to work themselves through the states and federal courts and the Supreme Court would have to grant certiorari to hear them. What current members of the Supreme Court would vote to outlaw premarital sex or the use of prophylactics ? How would these laws be enforced ? Would the police go door to door to see if unmarried people were having sex ? Would they invade people's homes to see if they have contraceptives ? Would they ban all sex acts that don't aren't related to procreation ? What about state's rights. My state of California will never go along with the laws you envision. How will they enforce them ? Who will enforce them ? There's not enough police now to enforce laws everybody agrees on.
