(82,849 posts)Isn't anyone going to pronounce doooooom? Or at least chip in with why Lamb is no better than Rothfus and it doesn't matter and why waste your time and the Republicans are invincible?
Come on, bots! Where are you?

(12,308 posts)Keith Rothfus is inept!

(16,888 posts)Not only is he inept, he's an inept, incompetent idiot. I suspect that somewhere in a small room off of his office he has an autographed picture of Louie Gohmert hanging on an altar.
Congressman Lamb is the perfect example of what Democrats must do to take control of Congress. He may not be the ideal candidate for more progressive party members, but he is the man to put that district back into Democratic control. THAT must be our #1 objective!
FakeNoose
(32,356 posts)...but the same can be said about virtually every PA politician on either side of the aisle. He's still an awesome US Representative and a perfect Dem. candidate.
Lamb is not a shill for the NRA, unlike other elected officials in our state, so please cool it with the talk about "not an ideal candidate."

(16,888 posts)his comment in the last campaign about supporting Pelosi.
https://www.cnn.com/2018/02/26/politics/pennsylvania-house-race-conor-lamb-nancy-pelosi/index.html
I believe this will qualify for allowing me to mention the possibility of him as "not an ideal candidate."
( and yes, I did support him with donations to his campaign )
FakeNoose
(32,356 posts)...but he was running in a conservative district and he had to win conservative voters over.
My apologies if you are already aware of this, but his opponent Rick Saccone's TV ads last Jan-Feb-March were all criticizing Nancy Pelosi. His ads were (mostly) paid for by the RNC and they barely noticed who Saccone was running against. Apparently all they care about is unseating Pelosi. So the TV ads were really ridiculous here last winter (I live in Pittsburgh.)
I'm sure that Connor Lamb, now that he has won the special election and is on the way to winning in November, knows how to be a good party member when it's important to play along. We can't put too much importance on campaign rhetoric, is how I feel about it. He can support Nancy now, and it won't make a bit of difference.

(16,888 posts)PA-12 is STILL an area that was won by IQ45 in 2016 (tons of MAGA signs everywhere - and still are!) and it will be important for Congressman Lamb to fight to the end - and present values that would mean something to his constituents.
Rothfus is bad - Lamb is good - but he has to be careful to keep his constituents contented with how he would represent them - and avoid being labeled as a "radical left winger" and all of the other nasty things the Tea Party would like to claim.
He ran his last campaign quite well - I have no doubt he will do so again this time.

(13,305 posts)...and the "Independent Democratic Caucus" that voted to give control to Republicans even though they were Democrats and the majority of elected state reps were Democrats. Or the BS that state Dems are shoveling out to new Governer Phill Murphy.
Not saying it's a given that will or would happen at the national level, but as politics in the blue states of New York and my own state of New Jersey show, it's also not a given that full control means actual control.
The point is less that we shouldn't vote for the Dem and more that once we are elected and have control there needs to be some degree of party discipline and consequences for blocking Democratic control and/or the basics of the Democratic agenda.

(12,308 posts)The gerrymandered districts were ridiculous...spread across several counties, with little slivers of communities in different, unrepresentative districts. The new districts make more sense that way. It just so happens that our district became even more Republican than it already was. Other districts became more Democratic.

(4,223 posts)You have my sympathies. We'll see what our horrifying SC will do with our MI proposal. These cheaters just never fucking give up, despite all our efforts to the contrary. There was a lot of support during the petition drives, but it could all go up in a puff of smoke.

(32,356 posts)Even if his opponent were only HALF as good as Connor Lamb, Rothfus would still deserve to lose. I believe Rothfus ran unopposed the last few times because of the nasty PA gerrymandering. But all that is over now!

It makes sense in some states for Democrats to be pro-gun and pro-RKBA. Not everyone needs to pick up an AR and start blasting down range, but all they have to say is, "no new Federal gun bans," for this issue to be a non-issue for some moderate voters.
