Federal judge opens door to early voting on Florida college campuses

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- A federal judge has ruled that Florida's ban on using university campuses for early voting is unconstitutional, opening the door for campus early voting sites this year.

The ban was instituted by Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner, who was sued over it in May by the League of Women Voters of Florida and several college students. In 2014, Detzner said that the University of Florida student union couldn't be used as an early voting location because state law doesn't allow it.

College and university campuses can be used for Election Day voting.

U.S. District Judge Mark Walker made the ruling Tuesday, saying Detzner's decision created a secondary class of voters and put a burden on students.

"We applaud Judge Mark Walker for his ruling," LWVF President Patricia Brigham said in a statement. "This is truly a victory for the citizens of Florida, especially with so many young people motivated to vote."

in Florida. I assume students can do that, although probably not as much fun as standing in line with other students.

Florida vote by mail --

"Vote-by-mail refers to voting a ballot received by mail or picked up by or for a voter who is unable or unwilling to go to the polls to vote during early voting or Election Day. A voter does not have to be absent from the county of residence or have an excuse in order to vote-by-mail except on Election Day (see details below). A request covers all elections through the end of the calendar year for the second ensuing regularly scheduled general election. To receive a vote-by-mail ballot, the voter or authorized person must contact his or her county Supervisor of Elections [which can be done on-line]."

Lot's of states allow this, even my red state. No one has an excuse for not voting. Democratic Party organizations can help voters who need it.
