(63,221 posts)Just like I thought Hillary and John Kerry were presidential. The problem is that the majority of Americans do not warm up to intelligent, intellectual policy wonks. I don't understand it because I think these people are the ideal candidates.
However, the average Joe and Jane want some racist, liberal-hating, nihilist who they can imagine themselves having a brewski with. I despair for the state of the electorate of this nation. Most of them have no business voting.

(49,150 posts)in the two states I lived at the time. There was no doubt in my mind they were the best candidates overall in 2004/2008, although I was pleased with the way Obama carried himself during his entire presidency.
Michele Obama continues to be my favorite quasi-political person of all.
Dunno what or who's next, but I've and put my time and energy in support of some of the best ever.
I have hopes for our America.

(18,087 posts)A president has to have a strong vision and the charisma to inspire us to buy into that vision. It needs to be someone with fire in his or her belly. As much as I like Schiff, I don't see him in that role

(3,147 posts)I think he is one of our best representatives in Congress. That doesn't mean he's Presidential Material. We need those great reps and senators in Congress. We shouldn't start talking about every Democrat we like as Presidential. Especially if they haven't said they are interested in running for President.

(90,189 posts)But most people are looking for someone with star power, pizazz.
Fortunately for all of us, Barack Obama had it all.
Unfortunately for all of us, reserved and restrained (but bright and experienced) Hillary was up against a reality tv star gifted with ratlike cunning and backed by Putin. She still won, by the numbers, as I never tire of saying, but she is not in the Oval Office.
What I am saying is that while I would vote for either of these men in a heartbeat, I'm not sure how far they could get.

(89,173 posts)i never cared for the so called charisma that certain types like Bush are said to have. i don't even consider those types charismatic.
even in the case of people like Obama and Bill Clinton what i found appealing about them was the same thing as the others .
EffieBlack
(14,249 posts)Many people thought Obama didn't have charisma and passion because he didn't talk loud and fast. But black men often cannot talk loud and fast without being viewed as "angry black men," so they afoptva lower key, softer tone, which some people unaware of that dynamic may see as a lack of passion. Obama was constantly accused of that.

(24,546 posts)Found him in "contempt", blamed him for "fast and furious".
VOX
(22,976 posts)And once upon a time, that would have been enough.
But todays politics are incredibly dirty, tough, and frankly mean. Given that reality, any viable candidate has to be charismatic and have a bit of street fighter in her/him. I cannot see Rep. Schiff as a winner in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan in short, the states where 45 eked out a Russian-pushed victory.
I have no ideas yet, as Im focused on 2018, and putting the brakes on the runaway train that is wall-to-wall, far-right Republican.

(6,709 posts)He's been excellent at chasing tRump--but that doesn't make him presidential.
Frustratedlady
(16,254 posts)I think he looks at the entire picture and doesn't make decisions on the run like Trump. It has been a short period of time Trump has been in office, but it has been a period of constant chaos. I don't see anything near that from Schiff.
He has also been up front about calling out Nunes and his cohorts when they are trying to cover up anything derogatory toward Trump. Schiff is dogged in getting the information whether they like it or not. I think the Democrats on that committee also agree with and follow Schiff closely and look up to him.
He would be a welcome contrast and one that we deserve.

(37,648 posts)There are certain types that win. I'm afraid he's not one of them.
There are actually physical attributes to winning the Presidential office, too, believe it or not. I read an article about it once. It has to do with what kind of person people see as a leader. Generally, attractive, tall, charismatic.
FDR won because he wasn't shown in his wheelchair. But he was thought to be attractive & tall, and was charismatic. Reagan, Kennedy, Clinton, Carter (charming more than charismatic), Obama, Bush Jr & Sr... Although there have been exceptions, like Nixon (although he's tall).
If Biden were younger, he'd have a good chance, I think. Tall, handsome, charismatic personality. Although there, too...if you have a long history in the Senate or House, there's a lot of votes, missed votes, and material to be attacked.
People also tend to think it's best if a governor or other executive becomes President, because it's an Executive job, whereas Congress is a legislative job...teamwork, committees, etc. Different set of skills. Not executive decision making.
Ferrets are Cool
(21,059 posts)imagine "presidential" material to be. I guess his type was "white male, racist, misogynous, and with a phobia of ethnicity's."
Honeycombe8
(37,648 posts)He's very tall. He WAS handsome as a young man, and for an old dude, is attractive when compared to many others his age. He's authoritarian in that he talks boldly, "appears" to be a leader, and he comes from a background where he called the shots rather than a committee-consensus basis thing, like Congress.
Ideologically or politically, his positions were different. But that's not what my post was talking about. He fits the profile that I've read about.

(3,233 posts)Lots of good candidates.
One thing I will NOT do is argue with fellow travelers. From what we know of the Mueller investigation, and all that acrimony between Sanders and Clinton supporters, Russia was stirring that pot. And I'm confident that I fell prey to some of it. And it sickens me.
I will not be goaded into an argument. I refuse to take the bait. Putin won once. He must not win again.

(7,879 posts)Unfortunately, (and this isn't how I would want it).... I think the charisma is very important...I just do. You kind of need all the pieces...like President Obama. I think about most of my friends (who are very progressive but don't watch Rachel, CSPAN, etc.) and they know few details about what's really going on (I'm mainly speaking about Russia). Right now, I like Chris Murphy of Connecticut (who has expressed no interest in running).....Having said all of this, I think Adam Schiff would be an awesome Attorney General.
