The 12 boys who were trapped in a flooded cave system in northern Thailand said at a press conference that they are considering becoming novice monks as a tribute to Saman Kunan, the 38-year-old former Thai Navy Seal who died during rescue efforts.
Banphot Konkum, father of 13-year-old Duangpetch Promthep, one of the team members, said all the Wild Boars will enter monkhood to honor Kunan.
In Theravada Buddhism, ordaining as a monk is a holy act. Those who ordain are believed to acquire a great deal of merit because they are devoting themselves to studying the teachings of the Buddha. In Buddhism, merit is understood as the value created by performing a wholesome activity, such as meditating. Many Buddhists practice dedicating merit to others (see an explanation and instruction from Lama Palden Drolma). If the boys become novice monks, they will donate their gained merit to Kunans memory.
We are planning the date and will do it whenever all the families are all ready, Banphot said.

Please note: This is a common practice throughout SE Asia, becoming a novice monk is not a life-long commitment to being a monk. Many young boys spend a few years as novice monks before assuming full adult (secular) responsibilities. So they are not making a life-long choice to be a monk just yet.

Tragic loss of 9 whole days in a young man's life to work on meditation and self discovery and discipline.

I see so much value in people taking the time to meditate and reflect upon life. Monks are "not a waste," unless you are a capitalist who just believes in the adage "time is money."

Yes, different orders have different foci, but they hardly do nothing.

Coventina
(27,063 posts)Such as giving lessons in foreign languages (like English).
A lot of them also are involved in health services, such as nursing and other types of care.
A great many of them function as counselors to their local communities, giving emotional and psychological support.
Of course a lot of them focus study on Buddhism and spreading Buddhist teachings.
In addition to that, most of them spend a significant time supporting themselves by growing food, making their robes, and other tasks related to everyday life.
It's a very busy life, most of it dedicated to improving the communities in which they live.
If they belong to a cloistered community, it's somewhat different of course, but even there they do a lot of manual labor that supports their cloistered community.

(90,560 posts)You can read the original texts of the Old Testament and New Testament, but they don't tell you much about how Christianity was practiced in the European Dark Ages or is practiced in the US of 2018.
The practice of Buddhism is embedded in many different cultures, all of which affect how it is expressed.

Just a thought...might have helped them a couple weeks ago...
Not sure how them being 'monks' would have helped them anyway...
Oh yeah...maybe if they were 'ordained' prior to taking that silly trek, their 'cave god' might not have flooded the place in anger...
Such silliness...when will 'we' move on from this BS?

(26,578 posts)Their situation was so far beyond simple swimming as to make your proposition utterly preposterous.
They did benefit a great deal from meditation helping them to stay calm and conserve energy. Led by their coach, who I believe had similar monk training.
I'm not religious either, but that's no justification for being patently ridiculous.

"The statute is of Jao Mae Nang Non which roughly translates as the reclining goddess and her name is shared with the cave, Tham Luang Nang Non, as well as the surrounding mountain, Doi Nang Non.
Her legend and, in turn, how her spirit came to linger in the cave in Chiang Rai province's far northern Mae Sai district near Myanmar is similar to dozens of other tales across a country whose belief system and folklore are heavily influenced by Brahmin, Buddhist and animist traditions."
"I don't know what upset her. But we will make an offering to please her," she said. "I hope she will be kind and let the boys come home."

It's 2018. Not 1018. Time for everyone to grow up.
You got a shit-stain in the white house now - brought to you by religion - so pardon me if my tone is a little off...the time for coddling or respecting this stupid stuff is over. There's too much at stake to put your hopes in cave gods and the like...

Or imaginary numbers in our wallets. Or imaginary forms of governments. The list of the magic thinking we base so many daily decisions on could, as you say, go on forever.
But I get it... the important thing is that hold what we dislike to a much higher standard than what we hold our own biases to; otherwise, we may wind up being rational and consistent.

Surely you know how that works? It happens every 4 years in your country...it's quite a big deal.
And fuck anyone who votes or voted for this turd because their religious convictions led them to that decision.
Are you honestly suggesting we can change voters minds on a message board? THIS board? You really believe that?
Fuck me..that's scary...
But please, tell us more about how these "African American and Latino groups"... "can sense when someone who is talking to them doesn't have much respect for their beliefs."
I'd love for you to expand on this.
Is this not an assertion that these groups will vote for the jesus candidate no matter what?
Who gives a flying fuck what someone with that mindset believes anyway? Why cater to these people who only care if the candidate is religious? Fuck them.
It's time for the adults to take charge. The intellectuals. Not 'god botherer' types who put this animal in the office in the 1st place...they have spoken - we know what they want, we know their expectations, and we know how far they'll go to make sure their candidate wins...
You can keep trying to reach these people, but I believe that ship has sailed. Time to appeal to rationality.
And, please, do it fast - can't take another 4 years of this shithead.
