(58,724 posts)120 is pretty rare.
Temperatures often reach 120 °F (49 °C) in late July and early August. The Needles weather station is frequently reported by the United States government's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) as the site of the highest daily temperature recorded in the U.S. during the desert summers. Needles occasionally sets national or world daily temperature records.

(53,741 posts)In 1995, Yuma reached its all-time high of 124 °F (51 °C).
I lived in AZ and Yuma and Gila Bend were always the hottest in the state. When it wasn't the Needles area as hottest for the Southwest desert regions, it was often Yuma or Gila Bend.
They both get up there in temperature as well this time of the year.

(15,635 posts)almost 7 years between 1981 and 88. One Memorial Day weekend I believe 1983 it got to 125 degrees. Yuma was often reported as the hottest place for the day when we lived there. Yuma where every day is Sunday.

(58,724 posts)I know people like to cite Wikipedia entries as if they are definitive sources, but that first sentence (presented with no citation) is not true. Temperatures in Needles do not often reach 120 degrees in late July.

(62,265 posts)That had to be a living nightmare. Surprised the motorcycles handled it well. I know how motorcycles are often aircooled (at least mine were) and high temps can have a toll.

(4,516 posts)I drove to LA in 52 hours.
I got to Needles at midnight. While driving I felt heat rising from the bottom of my car.
I pulled over and got out. The heat was coming from the ground. It was so hot that day the ground absorbed the heat and was giving it off after the sun went down.

(23,340 posts)Many memories. I lived in the area for 17 years.
and I saw many brush fires, and felt many earthquakes.
Swum in the ocean there during Santa Anas, with the wave tops blowing backwards.

(22,665 posts)According to Intelicast, average expected low temperature minimum is 84°, which puts you at 9° above average. Where I live, it's 7 - 15 degrees above the average overnight low about 75% of the time.
Expect the overnight temps for the next three decades to get hotter and hotter, since it takes about 30 years for CO2 from today to show up in the greenhouse effect of tomorrow's climate.

(9,137 posts)I spent 16 hours in Needles following a train derailment ahead of us. It reached 116 degrees.
It was a night train from LA to the Grand Canyon, so there was no dining car. We were told that we could leave at any moment, so we should leave the train in search of food. The supply of ice was limited, so only half the cars were air conditioned. The other half (including my car) had cold water.
I was 8 that summer. The memory remains 56 years later. Whoever said Needles was at the gates of Hell was wrong. It's Hell itself.
