via my account (which I never use).
I did a little research on something he posted. The man who turned himself in for destroying Trumps star with a pick is named Austin Clay.
What prompted me to look this up was a meme that this guy posted. I won't post it here, but this is what it said...
TRUMP'S WALK OF FAME STAR DESTROYED. THE VILLAIN IS NO SURPRISE. Police say he's an illegal half-mexican, half-black socialist Muslim from California with ties to ANTIFA who was paid by Soros to cast illegal votes and start up BLM. His name is Barraco Clintez. SHARE IF YOU THINK THIS SHOULD BE A HATE CRIME! (then it shows a picture of some random black guy in an orange prison jump suit).
Well, I burst out laughing when I read this, until I saw he had a bunch of likes and affirmative comments of people believing this.
My point of making this post here is as follows. When I first started posting here, I made several OPs that essentially stated that social media will be the downfall of this country, as well as other countries. This was before all this stuff about the nefarious actions of facebook became known. I stand by that opinion today. Someone needs to collar the CEOs of these social media companies. The fuckers should be shut down because they can't and won't get their shit together. You may think that not many people believe horseshit such as this, but I'm starting to think that a large minority, or perhaps even a majority of people believe whatever is shown to them on facebook. This is a real problem...pure propaganda. If it is not curtailed, we will get another Trump after he is gone.

They post no less than 40 to 50 memes a day. All the same kind of stuff. They believe this stuff, and so do a lot of their friends.

(17,286 posts)I don't know if I can explain this properly here, but I'm kind of obsessed with this guy and his brother. They are relatives of a few of my cousins.
I know these guys like a book. They post the most insane shit you have ever seen, and they believe it. They think they are doing the world a favor by posting stuff like this. Very very rarely, someone will comment that their post is untrue, and they will either remove it, or say "Well, it COULD be true".

Like you said, some people believe anything if its on Facebook.

(17,286 posts)And as far as what you believe, I'm telling you him and many others believe this based on the responses. I know who this guy is, I know what he posts, and I know what he believes. I'm getting a little tired of being doubted here. I posted the thing for you to see...what else do you want me to do?

(17,286 posts)I look at this guy's wall EVERY DAY. He's stupid and he believes this shit. So do his right wing friends. You're going to have to trust me on this. I'd post some others with the responses, but I'm not going to mess around trying to figure out how to block out the names. Is it difficult to understand that I know the guy believes this?

(5,126 posts)I haven't seen this particular meme yet, but the shit that people post, share and "like" is beyond absurd. Critical thinking even among some of my more educated friends has seemed to disappear. They don't really care if they are spreading untrue propaganda as long as it fits their particular narrative.
LuckyCharms
(17,286 posts)I guess it is so absurd, it is hard to believe unless you see it with your own eyes.
Jim Lane
(11,175 posts)Somebody created it to make fun of the nuttiness on the right wing. It got circulated. People saw it, caught the joke immediately, and laughed.
Then, it found its way to someone who didn't catch the joke -- who, instead, swallowed it whole. It started making the rounds among people like your Facebook friend. They passed it on to each other as serious information.
I completely agree with your point. There's a human tendency to suspend critical judgment when confronted with something that conforms to one's preconceptions. This tendency is stronger in some people than in others. These days, in the United States, it's much stronger among Trump's supporters. Trump's opponents aren't immune to it but there is a real difference.
That your friend posted this, in all seriousness, is indeed alarming.

These two brothers post everything as "public", so I can see it, even though they are not friends of mine. I ran across them after seeing some responses to some of my right wing cousins.
I find the stuff that they post fascinating and frightening at the same time. Their posts kind of let me see what the worst of the worst are saying.
Thanks for understanding my point here, yardwork.

(2,767 posts)finger tips and somehow you are still susceptible to this sort of thing. Also, I just don't get the meme thing with them. They take them so very seriously. I don't think most sane people see them as more than as a little jokey type deal for a brief laugh before it's forgotten about.
The base republican treats it like air, or water. It's like the republican voter base has had their thought processes corrupted from decades of poison from the right wing media. Now the only things they can intellectually digest is memes and the information equivalent to chicken mcnuggets.
Now that I think about it, their president is exactly like them in that respect. Might be a reason why they are willing to sink on the Titanic with him. A repudiation of trump is a repudiation of them and their dim bulb lifestyle.

Suggesting that any media that publishes obvious satire should be shut down seems a tad over-the-line to me.
I understand your frustration that some believe this nonsense. But look how many continue to believe the earth is flat, that the sun revolves around the earth, that the earth is only 6,000 years old, that evolution is claptrap, and on and on and on.
We just need to accept that there is an audience for any meme, however ridiculous.
Let's keep our speech free.
LuckyCharms
(17,286 posts)that distribute propaganda to the extent that it has the potential of swaying the opinions of millions of voters and potentially closing the minds of citizens to the truth.
There is a reason propaganda is dangerous, and there is a reason we have been warned about it for years...because it is more effective than a hot war at destroying a nation. And yes, this is propaganda, and a lot of it is perpetrated by countries wishing to see our downfall. So I guess that is where I draw the line.
