1. Picked the wrong target

Should have called out Trump for a partisan speech and endorsement. Without equal time for the rival party, they look like GOP stooges.

2. They are being savaged on their Twitter feed

They did come out with a statement that inviting the President has been SOP for them. They should have drawn up a signed agreement to keep it non-partisan and cut his mike when he went partisan. Given what has happened in the past, they should have known.
