Betsy DeVoss $40 million yacht set adrift by vandals
By Morgan Gstalter - 07/26/18 07:17 AM EDT
A $40 million yacht owned by Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos was reportedly untied from the dock at a northern Ohio marina and set adrift.
The captain of the 163-foot yacht, named "The Seaquest," called the Huron Police Department early Sunday morning when the crew realized the boat was floating in the Huron Boat Basin, The Toledo Blade reported.
The yacht hit a dock, causing between $5,000 and $10,000 in damage, the newspaper added, citing a police report.
Investigators are hoping surveillance footage will show who untied the yacht from the dock.
It is unclear why the boat, which is owned by the Michigan family, was in northern Ohio, the Blade noted.
It is one of 10 boats owned by DeVos and her family, according to the newspaper.
DeVos is one of the wealthiest members of President Trumps Cabinet.
Business Insider reported in February that DeVos and her husband, former Amway CEO Dick DeVos, have an estimated net worth around $1.3 billion.

(22,037 posts)While I appreciate the frustration and anger we all have towards Trump & Co., your idea would open a dangerous front of retaliatory acts of vandalism and violence. Do you think that "our aristocrat tyrants" wouldn't respond in kind or even worse?
Please rethink your position.

(16,168 posts)isn't tied to a dock with 3/4 inch nylon line. Nor is it pushed off with a foot to the gunnel. Who ever did it had some strength and what's even funnier is that the crew didn't notice for a while.
Whoops, I just read it is a 163 footer. Almost as big as my jonboat with a trolling motor.
Looking at the website for the Huron Boat Basin, one is hard pressed to find a 163 ft dock. The largest available for seasonal rental is 32 ft long for approx $2200.00 the season, did they tie 5 of them together for her?

(22,037 posts)It's strange that the crew were unaware that the boat (ship?) was moving. Perhaps it was a very calm night.
The vandals-- and that's what they are since they were breaking the law by violating someone's property-- planned this act before executing it. Like you wrote, onethatcares, a yacht of that size has at least four to six dock lines and its displacement weight is many tons so moving it from the dock would require quite a bit of force. I wonder how they did it.
While we all hate Trump and his minions, I don't approve of illegal acts. We're supposed to be better than that. It's understandable that there's so much frustration with these scoundrels but we won't win the political battle with acts of vandalism.
