DeVos' $40 million yacht vandalized at Huron dock

HURON, Ohio — A boat owned by the family of U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos was vandalized over the weekend while moored at a Huron dock, according to the Huron Police Department.

The Seaquest was moored at the Huron Boat Basin, 330 Main St., according to a police report. The captain of the 163-foot yacht, worth a reported $40 million, called police at about 6 a.m. Sunday, telling them that he and the crew realized at sunrise that someone had untied Seaquest from the dock, setting it adrift.

The crew eventually got control of the yacht, but not before it struck the dock, causing an estimated $5,000 to $10,000 in damage from large scratches and scrapes, according to the police report

I've been doing a bit of looking and it appears that they have owned at least ten large boats, but whether or not the DeVos family currently owns ten is a dubious assertion.

According to this page, they have pretty good taste. They owned the 53 meter (174 foot) stunning Italian built Perini Navi sailing yacht "Independence", now "Jasili II. This is the kind of thing I would own if the old "If I won the lottery" thing came true.

Now...having said "pretty good taste" let me be clear, I have no love at ALL for Ms. Betsy. She can fall off the pier at her house in Holland, for all I care.

But I like boats, and I can appreciate the naval architects hand. That Perini Navi is one gorgeous boat.

FWIW, the page I linked above has some inaccuracies, but I'll let that go to those more inquisitive to find them.

the agency that drugs them refuses to release them to relatives that show up unless that relative can show proof that they can afford to pay for the psychotropic drugs that the agency placed the kids who were "acting out" when removed from their parents and placed into cages for months.

Maybe the "Old Salt sea hands' failed to properly secure the boat themselves. That's my guess. I've parked my tiny tiny 24 ft ski boat in the same marinas as 100 to 200 ft yachts. The lack of external security is quite amazing. Its very common for the owners of all the other boats and yachts to share the same dock/deck. So its not secured.

Literally anyone could walk by and pull a few ropes within a minute or two, and then be gone.

Motion sensors? on a boat? Not to that degree. It is on the water mind you and a few feet of drift is very normal.

Finally. While these things are huge and expensive, they don't have dedicate security teams until you get into the super-rarified 250 to 300+ plus mark. The security team on a boat this "small" (150ft) is the same crew that drives about (probably about 7 people including the cook) . And they aren't armed (lots of problems as these are international vessels)

If you are ever in Ft lauderdale, take a walk through one of the several major marines. You can get right up next to any of the superyachts, and its interesting to lookup up, to see who they are owned by.

....a boat that big would have at a minimum a bow line, a stern line and 2 spring lines, so either 4 lines or 8 if they doubled them up.
4 lines to un-cleat themselves seems unlikely if they were even half-assed cleated.
Now if they were stern to they would have had a least 2 stern lines plus the anchor or buoy they were tied to.

An unsanctioned by the owner Saturday Night party onboard has caused many a trip from the slip, if you know what I mean.
My observation from many decades in several popular port-o'-call towns, this sort of "vandalism" happens quite a few times during the season.

The crew had a bit too much fun Saturday night when they were "off the clock", mistakes were made, and they're just covering their butts.

I lived in the Detroit area all through the 90's, in various places. Dearborn, Farmington Hills, Redford, etc. Went to Cedar Point once by myself! Still had a blast. "The Roller Coast"!! GREAT park. Just great.

I kind of miss that area, even the winters. I had friends in the Western UP I used to visit at Christmas time.

The Great Lakes has some spectacular beauty. Many people aren't aware that there is more miles of coast line in Michigan (including the Upper Peninsula) than there is on the entire East Coast of the US.

Most of us understand there are limits to what the world can produce. We think there are limits to wealth. Evangelicals believe God makes all wealth and natural resources unlimited to the believer sort of like magic. It comes out of nowhere. No true believer would be hurt by their scheme unless it's the will of God. So they can just rape the rest of us in the name of christ.
