No more Necco Wafers? Or Clark Bars, or Sweethearts, or Mary Janes or Squirrel Nut Zippers ?

Necco candy factory shuts down abruptly after company is sold again (Boston Globe)

By Katheleen Conti Globe Staff July 24, 2018

The Necco plant in Revere was abruptly shut down Tuesday after the entity that bought the company at bankruptcy auction in May announced it had sold Necco to another candy manufacturer.
***
The company, which is operating Necco under the affiliate name Sweetheart Candy Co. LLC, did not identify Necco’s new owner or say whether candy production would resume. Necco is the country’s oldest continuously operating candy company.
***
Necco’s chief executive Michael McGee reportedly told workers Tuesday afternoon at a town-hall-style meeting held at the cafeteria that Necco would shut down “effective immediately,” according to a Necco mechanic, Chris, who asked that his last name not be used.

“There was a statement they read off about severance pay and ‘thank you for your service’ and where you can pick up all your personal belongings,” Chris said, adding that workers were stunned. “We were told don’t show up tomorrow [Wednesday].”
***
Necco has been making the classic Necco Wafers since 1847, as well as other sweets, including Sweethearts, Mary Jane, Thin Mints, Clark Bars, and the Sky Bar.

The other candy that is mentioned in the OP actually ranges from 'ok' to 'good'. But if losing them is the only price the world has to pay to be rid of 'mary janes', I consider that a bargain.

'Mary Janes'....worst halloween candy ever.

I used to get these at the movie snack bars in the 60's, and preferred the chocolate ones. Jujubes too. They were both kind of nasty (jujubes taste like soap), but as a kid, wasn't super particular.

Necco factory is right around the corner. The empty parking lots today had a ghost town look, but local employers are already interviewing and hiring the ex-Necco employees. Everyone will get a job. It's just sad to see these sweet treats end there run.

I can’t say that I really loved Necco Wafers, but they are / were a staple old-person candy and I did enjoy them from time-to-time. I bet you those pink Canada wintergreen/pepto bismol flavored mints will be next to go.

The world is surely getting ready for Armageddon. First trump becomes president then Necco Wafers are done for, the war to end humanity has to be next.

I've loved Necco Wafers since I was a kid in the 1960s. Once when I was on a first date, the young lady I was with saw that I had a roll of them in my car. She asked if I liked them. When I told her how I loved them, she bluntly told me that we had no future because I clearly had no taste!

I still love 'em. When I heard the company was in trouble, I bought a small case just in case this is the end.

I now, I'm weird.
