(268,698 posts)It's called a selenelion and it's when you can see an eclipsed Moon on the western horizon and the rising Sun on the eastern horizon.
It sounds impossible - an eclipse occurs when the Sun, Earth and Moon are in a straight line - meaning you couldn't see the Moon and the Sun at the same time.
However, the bending - or refraction - of the rays of light caused by our atmosphere by about half a degree makes it possible to see both.
...........
Learned a new word too - selenelion.

(36,375 posts)Hell, everything will be a hazy red.
The only upside to the fire: the smoke layer dropped the temperature from yesterdays triple digits to a comfortable mid-eighties today (maybe low nineties by sunset).

(17,136 posts)I always get up early, around 4am, so circumstances were all in place. It's mid-winter but has been exceptionally clear for days. After taking a few pix, we took the dogs to the beach in the dark and watched the moon fade. Didn't see the selenelion (thanks for the new word!) but did see a couple of satellites.
Will you get to see it there?
