HOMESTEAD, Fla. (AP) A 15-year-old girl has run away from a Florida detention facility being used to house migrant children.
Homestead Police said they received a call from staff at the Homestead Air Reserve base on Friday saying the teen had run away while being transported to an eye exam. An anonymous tipster told authorities the girl was hiding behind a large toolbox inside an auto care shop.

Gonzalez said hes glad he told the officers where to find the girl.
They were going around and around, they knew she was close by, he said. Its safer for her in detention than out on the streets with no family. It was a hard decision.
Gonzalez, who came to the United States from Cuba in 1971 with his family, said he supports the Trump administrations tough stance on border security but disagrees with separating families.
People who want to come here, and work for the American Dream, they should get papers and follow the rules, Gonzalez said. But it breaks my heart to see mothers and fathers divided from their children. Families should be together all the time.

(13,767 posts)He , and many others, may not realize that the ONLY way they can enter the U.S. is to claim Asylum. THERE IS NO LINE to apply for citizenship. There is a lottery for some. That's it. There is no application, review, verification, and then admittance. NONE! They are barred from this country unless they are successful in a claim for Asylum.
But he got taken care of because we had a special provision created for Cubans. No one else. Just Cubans.

(51,377 posts)She had already been ratted out by Mr. Gonzalez and was being sent back to the government run torture chamber. Of coarse she was hysterical.
As reported in the Washington Post article cited in the OP:
She was desperate to be safe, but she didnt want to go back to that place, Sandigo said. She said she wanted her freedom, and her family. She has nobody here.
....
Gonzalez said hes glad he told the officers where to find the girl.

That is why she was inconsolable: she was going back to the hell she was trying to escape from.

A 15-year-old girl without friends, family, or home alone on the streets of an alien city? What would you have done? For real?

(4,066 posts)Ironically enough, Cubans, for years, enjoyed a special status in the US because our fight against the USSR and Communism in the Cold War.
Cuban refugees simply needed to get their feet on dry land and they were allowed to stay and pursue permanent residency after a year. This is one of the things that gave us Elian Gonzalez. Obama revoked this policy as he normalized relations with Cuba.
My personal observation having lived in Miami (Homestead is not far from Miami) is Miami-Cubans looked down on other Hispanics. I'm not saying this motivated the Trump supporter in this instance. I do not know that man or his thoughts. I'm also not saying it didn't influence the Trump supporter either. Trump supporters do seem to have a racist, us-vs-them, bent.

(3,268 posts)"the United States Congress passed the Cuban Adjustment Act in 1966. The Cuban Refugee Program provided more than $1.3 billion of direct financial assistance. They also were eligible for public assistance, Medicare, free English courses, scholarships, and low-interest college loans.[citation needed]
Some banks pioneered loans for exiles who did not have collateral or credit but received help in getting a business loan. These loans helped many Cuban Americans to secure funds and start up their own businesses. With their Cuban-owned businesses and low cost of living, Miami, Florida and Union City, New Jersey (dubbed Havana on the Hudson)[5][6] were the preferred destinations for many immigrants and soon became the main centers for Cuban American culture."
I guess some Hispanics are more equal than others...

(18,124 posts)fuck Gonzalez. Although a 15-year-old girl on the street would be a tragedy waiting to happen. So as much as I hate to say it, she is 'safer' in detention "American Dream" Gonzales? God damn, a conservative person can rationalize any goddamn thing. I bet he doesn't give a damn about the separation policy of trump either, many many Cubans in Florida are very conservative. Gonzalez is just saying something that sounds right. I won't start with the different colours of brown people situation that Cuba has always had. Like Brazil, the lighter the brown the more upper class they are thought to be and like Amerikan whites, hateful to the darker skins. Real brown? Well, I know all about that too.
