No disrespect meant to all those who are suffering, and those we have lost - of course.

(463 posts)They live in the Midwest, and whenever anything happens in California, they're on the phone.
"Are you dying yet?!"
They're pretty convinced the entire state is going to die based on what they see on TV.
"No, I live near the water. Pretty ok over here."
"No, you are going to die from that state. We know it."
It quietly cracks me up.

(463 posts)It doesn't happen here in S.F. Just kind of foggy and drizzles sometimes. I'd pay to see a solid lightning storm.

(64,979 posts)Riding the tractor up in n. central ks..in my teens..praying for rain so
I could go play..I would watch the storms develop, the lightning, the
towering storm clouds..the thunder. And then they would roll by and
away from me...(sigh)

(16,104 posts)Since the 1960's all I ever heard was THE BIG ONE is coming and overdue, beachfront property in Arizona!
Of course, in "geological time" it could take a while, but my perception of "California" was altered forever!

(463 posts)He's based elsewhere, but any time there was the slightest tremblor, I'd get a text about it. What he kept saying was, "You do realize the city you're living in is on borrowed time?" It utterly floors him how much of S.F. is built on more or less landfill.
For example, we have the Leaning Tower of Stupid because they didn't drill into the bedrock.
Where I'm at should be ok. But, no, half this city is based on stupid. We will pay.

(1,896 posts)That's a very interesting book. The opening pages where he recounts a dream of walking through a burning forest are very memorable. I read it when I was in high school and told my parents I wanted to be a smoke jumper for a summer job. That didn't go over well.

(31,261 posts)buildings on the Earth. Truly amazing. And someting like 330,000 Earths can be put inside the Sun. And the Sun is one of the smallest type of stars. And even the largest stars are but specs in the galaxy.

(13,352 posts)I was just thinking about these fires and how long it's been since the Big One here (Angora 2007) ...we might be due for another round, I should really make sure I got my shit together....
