Quite a few are repeating the "fact" that, since 67 votes are necessary to impeach,

even if we pick up 2 or 3 Senate seats in November---plus take the House---we can't impeach Trump.

If our Blue Wave materializes---and I believe it will---and we pick up 35, 40 or more House seats, pick up ANY Senate seats, most of the governorships and state House seats in play, does anyone really believe the GOP Senate contingent will not put their fingers in the wind, as they always do, and try to get "on the right side of history"?

I understand some will be implicated in all sorts of skullduggery and will go down swinging, but I think we'll be able to finesse enough votes to flush Trump.

Best case scenario- We have 52 senate seats in the 116th Congress; we hold all our vulnerable seats and pick up AZ, TN, and NV.

Please name the fifteen Deplorable, i.e Republican senators who will vote to remove Trump from office.

Thank you in advance.

I'm one of the most optimistic guys on this board but I believe the only way to get Trump out of office is to defeat him at the ballot box.

only when BIPARTISAN agreement that it is necessary develops, even if we get control of the house in November. Bipartisan probably requires something like a third of Republican and right-leaning independent voters to join the left. Then, if Trump is not persuaded to resign, he will be tried in the senate. If found guilty by 2/3 of the senate, he will be removed.

In any case, imo there's absolutely no point to trying to count numbers or name names of specific senators now. Removal will happen when bipartisan electoral support grows to a point that enables this huge step.

Trump's treasonous behaviors and the Mueller investigation both seem to be moving us inexorably to that point. Putin could throw a hammer into the machinery, such as a big cyber attack, or delay by big terrorist attack could happen, California finally falling off into the ocean would be a distraction, or tampering with the elections could leave congress under Republican control, but short of some disaster bigger than what's happening right now...

Let's win Congress, open hearings, let Mueller finish his investigation, and let Trump run for reelection while he's either under indictment or exposed for the traitor and criminal that he is. Let's hang it around the GOP's neck that they'll have to explain to the American people why they are protecting a traitor and a criminal during an election year. I forsee not only a certain presidential victory no matter who we run but I forsee massive gains in the legislature, possibly even a filibuster proof super majority.

If Democrats lose no Senate seats and pickup 3, plus win big in the House, the Republican will be scared. Then add all the Republicans who could be vulnerable in 2020 or have expressed some discomfort with Trump, and it's possible to get to 67. Possible, but not likely, everything would have to break our way.

If they want to make a point, they should censure him - which has the same effect as impeachment without removal AND can get the votes - and then move heaven and earth to block him at every turn, thwart his agenda, and weaken him so that he cannot win in 2020.

But impeachment is a waste of time and is politically dumb.

Just as it would have been The Right Thing To Do to prosecute the banksters and the war criminals of the Bush administration, Impeachment hearings, successful or not, are essential to preserving democracy and the Constitution.

Holding impeachment hearings on the very real crimes of the Trump administration would raise awareness of 1) Trump's crimes, and the unspinnable evidence proving them, likely damaging his chances at reelection, 2) the position of GOP legislators in supporting the criminal in the White House , likely damaging their chances at reelection, and 3) that Democrats will take a firm, unswerving stance at protecting this country from the cancerous toddler in White House.

Sun Jul 29, 2018, 12:42 PM
Jul 2018

1. Is that we win either the House or the Senate to prevent any more bad Republican legislation from being passed with 51 votes.

2. Winning the Senate would be extra good, so we can block both republican legislation and their judicial appointments.

3. Whichever chamber we have the majority get our priority legislation on the table and position ourselves to take back the WH and both chambers in 2020.

4. Come out of the gate in 2021 to reverse as much of the bad GOP laws with 51 votes of our own, starting with rescinding the tax cuts for the rich.

These are all things I see as realistic. In fact, We appear to have a great opportunity of winning at least one chamber if we don't do things to hurt ourselves, such as, campaign on impeachment. A conviction in the Senate, on the other hand, in this political climate IMHO, is little more than a wet dream, and I fear that any discussion of it only motivates their voters and works against our chances. So I hope we avoid this topic altogether and let Trump/Republicans keep on being their own undoing.

Removal in the Senate will be much tougher. 67 to remove.

By then we will know a lot more about Dump’s crimes. So the grand compromise may end up being removal of Dump and letting Pence be the placeholder until 2020.

If the midterms are an utter ass kicking for the GOP, the Senate rethugs are going to be much more amenable to throwing Dump overboard. Pence will be severely restricted if the House and Senate flip in November.
