(17,984 posts)I would be thrilled to have her for two more decades.

(26,731 posts)First time theres a Democratic President and Senate she needs to step aside.

(17,984 posts)Worst case scenario where the Rump appoints himself president for life...
Anyway, I like RBG and want to see her active (even if it's outside of the SCOTUS) for a long time yet.

(26,731 posts)Obama and 57 Democrats would have picked a fine replacement.

(62,270 posts)Out of 8 years of office.
And even then it relied on Lieberman.

(26,731 posts)Just the Senate
joshcryer
(62,270 posts)With a Democratic majority. I think the House was a wee bit longer.

(26,731 posts)We controlled the Senate for the first few years of Obamas first term. For the first two we had a 57-43 majority.

(62,270 posts)We got rid of that for most nominees and made clear that we would do the same thing for SCOTUS nominees if they tried to block a qualified pick.
RBG absolutely could have been replaced in 2010.

(62,270 posts)I had forgotten that we used the nuclear option on nominees.

(45,433 posts)remember how that worked out
We don't need Ginsburg or any liberal justice to kick the bucket until Dems control the Senate and presidency. Trump's already got 2 supreme court picks so far, swinging the court to the right for a long time.

(37,648 posts)She could have timed it right.
The thing is...she may not have a say in how long she lasts. Anything can happen at that age. A stroke or any number of things could affect her brain.
It's risky, to say the least. We have to win in 2020. That's all there is to it.

(10,828 posts)The amazing thing about Ginsberg in addition to her judicial clout is the fact she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer ten years ago, a cancer that has a terrible track record in survival stats. And yet here she is giving a 5-year prophesy and running around, exercising, doing appearances like the Energizer Bunny.
I am in absolute awe! May you live forever, RBG. You're certainly teaching us lesser mortals how it's done.
