This is going to be a pretty problematic admission for Rudes and Trump. I'll explain in a moment.

1. So Mueller's already got Gates, and by throwing him under the bus Rudy/Trump are pushing Cohen

towards Mueller as well. That seems like a bad strategy. I'm not sure they have any good strategies available, but actively pursuing an obviously bad one seems... unwise?

Russians launched DCLeaks and related sites on Facebook and Twitter on June 8, just day before Trump Tower meeting so they were ready to begin releasing stolen emails. Trumpers have been claiming they didn't get anything out of meeting so it wasn't collusion, but Don Jr. specifically communicated with Russians about how Trump would especially like some dirt later in the summer.

Files or pics or whatever ... I immediately went "Bullshit Butthead... the DCLeaks and Wikileaks releases of stolen DNC/Podesta data in the ensuing weeks and months ... WAS 'The Dirt'. Russians aren't so friggin' stupid as to hand over stolen docs to Trump's campaign, right in Trump Tower!"

I seriously doubt Manafort was actually expecting them to do so either at the time, but kept his mouth shut to make sure the meeting happened. He had to do his part to 'get whole' with the Oligarch he owed $10M to, after all. But would bet that he told those present that they could trust the Russian Lawyer in terms of the documents being released over the summer, explaining how this method, using Wikileaks, was far safer for everyone involved.

IIRC the domain was registered much closer to the meeting, and July 27th is either went it went live, or when Guccifer 2.0 i.e. Russian Military Intelligence ... first released some stolen docs, I forget which.

4. Until cohen hands over the proof, it's just more water muddying. More confusion.

5. Cohen doesn't 'need' to hand over 'proof', there could other corroborative evidence ...

If Gates, for example, backs up that this planning meeting took place, and Trump was either there or on the speakerphone, and/or if there are phone records that could corroborate, etc.

Cohen's unlikely to have physical proof, but if testifies under oath to this effect, and there's ANYTHING else to corroborate what he's saying ... Dumpie ain't gettin' out of it.
