Rob Reiner on Trump: We have Archie Bunker in the White House

Actor Rob Reiner compared President Trump to sitcom character Archie Bunker on Friday, telling CBS's Stephen Colbert that the country is "living" the sitcom "All in the Family" in real life.

Reiner said on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" on Friday night that the bigoted Bunker character bears comparisons to Trump.

"People always say, 'you could redo "All in the Family" today,' [but] I said 'What do you mean? We're living it,' " Reiner, who also starred on the show, told Colbert.

"We've got Archie in the White House," Reiner said to applause.

Reiner's comments echo those of Norman Lear, the creator of "All in the Family," who said in 2016 that Trump and Bunker were essentially the same.

...where the new Archie is again, the butt of all the jokes and comes off as profoundly absurd and stupid to the point of hilarity.

Laughter and smart comedy is good medicine in this day.

and bigoted. But Archie had a heart. He loved his family. He was continually shocked when he learned that all different types of people were not unlike him in what they wanted and needed. I don't think Archie would have had it in him to be a cruel despot.

He was lazy in his assumptions, overly confident in how he pigeon-holed his views of the world, and real slow to pick up on when he was just being a jackass, but he wasn't impenetrable.

He was a sucker for praise, up until he figured out he was being scammed.

He was a bigot, but paused when he realized his new pals were Klansmen.

Archie had a conscience and moral center. Faulty, but working.

Trump has none.

People are upset with cops killing unarmed Black people today, it was much worse when the Archie Bunker character was developed, but it was not caught on camera like today.

Carroll O'Connor (Archie Bunker) and Norman Lear (show's creator and producer), were pretty much well ahead of their time as progressive voices against injustices that existed in society during their time.

Hell, it was a good show all around. Towards the end of his interview he pretty much summed up the state of mainstream media by commenting "the truth doesn't pay". His talk about very good reporters and reporting getting bottled up when it "hits that wall" was interesting too.

He was a good man, uneducated but decent and willing to learn. He wasn't mean and his family was important to him, he would never have considered his daughter to be a sex object worthy of himself.

He had his biases, but he was open to reality and willing to change his beliefs when it was shown they were wrong. Eliminating “ The Fairness Doctrine” during Reagan’s tenure went a long way to getting the terrible right wing media we have now.
