GOP insiders are becoming increasingly concerned the Donald Trumps visits to battleground states to promote local candidates may be having a negative effect on voters as the president seems more interested in talking about himself than the local candidate in need of a boost at the polls.
[Trump is] casting himself as the star of the midterms, eagerly inserting himself into hotly contested primaries, headlining rallies in pivotal swing states and increasing his fundraising efforts for Republicans, some Republicans say his belief in his own star power has become problematic.
Tuesday, a top GOP operative confided Today is a perfect example of Trumps failings as an advocate for candidates. Instead of attacking [Democrat] Danny OConnor, hes attacking NBA star LeBron James.
Another GOP official said Trumps style is not conducive to building up the featured candidates. He could easily be very helpful but has no interest in staying on message, he confessed.

Trump talked about the local candidate for 5 minutes,
and over one hour about himself.

(10,885 posts)He gives the same speech over and over, simply inserting the candidate's name a couple of times within the first five minutes before warbling on about his own supposed accomplishments. His followers (literal and figurative) can give his speech verbatim by now. Yada-yada tax cuts, yada-yada crowd size, yada-yada better than Obama, yada-yada no collusion, yada-yada fake news.
