Excess pork supply, tariffs mean losses for Illinois pork farmers

https://wqad.com/2018/08/06/excess-pork-supply-tariffs-mean-losses-for-illinois-pork-farmers/

(Illinois News Network) – Pork farmers across Illinois are gearing up for what may be one of the more significant financial losses in recent years.

Pork production across the country is expected to increase by 5 percent this year, an increase that will force lower prices, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

“Our farmers in the United States have gotten more efficient at raising hogs every year, and the bigger picture is those gains in efficiency have surpassed the gains in increased demand for pork products,” said Mike Doherty, senior economist and policy analyst for Illinois Farmers Bureau.

Due to the increased supply of pork this year coupled with the tariffs placed on pork exports to Mexico and China, prices are expected to drop significantly.

I never buy pork or beef. I love my goat and lamb meat along with road-kill deer. My neighbor is getting ready to butcher a bunch of ducks and I'm ready.

Visiting in the heart of the Pork Producers for a couple of weeks. Hey folks,it ain't a very pretty picture for these folks. First thing, the China Pork buyers are gone, even though China owns one of the largest Pork operations in the world. It is the Tariff's that are hanging that are now creating this massive Pork Cuts surplus which is about to be bought by the USDA and stored in America-Cold warehouses and freezers,oh btw,we as taxpayers will be paying premium storage rates for this surplus.

Here is another part of this Pork issues many forget. To feed this Pigs,Feed Grain Grower Contracts are let to area Grain Farmers to supply the Corn, oats, wheat, barley, and even Soybeans to feed these Pigs. And these contracts usually have wall away provisions were if the Hog grower does not need the Grain, tough luck, and if you do get the sale,it is at local cash price, which is generally lower than the Chicago Board of Trade price.

And of course, most of these Contract Growers voted for anyone and everyone with a R after their names.

Guess they are not tired of winner yet.
