(10,252 posts)I'm less concerned with her ignorance about the difference between public and private entities, than about her aggression. The "libtards" thing that implies that liberals are retarded, as in stupid, is indicative of a mind filled with hatred and condescension. I doubt that she's every considered that giving women the right to vote, to own property in their own right right, to consent to a marriage, to get a divorce, get an education -- that those are all liberal ideas. And in their time, quite radical liberal ideas.
It's also probably never occurred to her that she's even aggressive and projecting emotions of blind hatred. I see people like this all the time. It never occurs to them to be nice, to say a few kind words. It's very sad. It takes such little effort to speak words of kindness.

(37,648 posts)I hadn't thought of it before, so looked it up. In countries that have a publicly-traded market, like the U S, a privately held company doesn't, or can't, trade on the market.
But what it seems like people were saying, when they said FB was a privately owned company, is that it's not owned or run by the government, and it's not a business that serves the public in general, like a bakery. It's publicly owned...that is, it's owned by the original owners who put it on the market, AND it's owned by shareholders. Those who own the most shares control the company and can take it private again, if they want. So it is still owned by a definite group of people who can set the rules. People in the public have to "join," like a club. The owners of the club can decide who gets to join, and all the other rules.
Something like that?

(9,893 posts)The 1st Amendment doesn't talk about public and private at all. We talk about it that way as shorthand. It says, "Congress shall make no law..." So Congress can't make a law forbidding a company, any company, from airing certain content. However, Joe Smitherberg as head honcho at Companybook, can say that the company he runs will not air certain content. He is OK unless his prohibition runs up against some other law that could be applied to content. For instance, if there were a law prohibiting discrimination against white, middle-aged, rotund men and Smitherberg axed someone because said content-provider had thinning hair, Mr. Content-Provider might successfully argue that axing men for thinning hair unfairly targeted middle-aged, rotund, white man.
So no, technically she is not correct. She's jaw droppingly off base.

(37,648 posts)It was about whether FB is a public or a private company. It is not a privately held company, like she says. I said in my post that my research and opinion ended there.
So the posts saying it is a privately held company are not accurate. But it is not a business open to the public generally and can set its own rules. Just like any media company that is publicly held can. Like NBC, ABC, Twitter, etc.
SHE was saying that people were wrong to say FB is a privately held company. She is correct about that. She is wrong to assume that that means FB can't have rules for participating in it.
