Finally, one myth that should die with the race is the notion that the Democratic Party has to choose between the OConnor profile and the far-left-leaning Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez profile. In fact, major political parties have never operated that way, at least not successfully. The Democrats can run OConnor in the Ohio 12th (and last nights winning, moderate gubernatorial nominee Gretchen Whitmer in Michigan) but run Ocasio-Cortez in the New York 14th. They will all agree that Trumps tax cuts for the rich are bad, dreamers are good, health-care coverage must be expanded and Russia is not our friend. For now, thats more than enough to hold the Democrats together. Progressive bona fides will matter in 2020, when one Democrat has to represent the entire party, but thats still two years away, so we might hit pause on the talk of a Democratic civil war.

If I lived in OH 12 I would vote for O'Connor. If I lived in NY 14 I would vote for Ocasio-Cortez , eazy peazy.

(146,327 posts)What will win in one place will lose miserably in another. The voters will decide who they want, wherever they are.
We need not to forget that. By focusing primarily in our own areas, which we understand, we'll gain more ground than by worrying about distant places with which we're not familiar.
You vote locally. Work on elections locally, too. Don't worry too much about other places. They'll make their own decisions.

(86,005 posts)...nice to read something intelligent about our primary, and free from all of the internecine invective and accusation that primary challengers were met with here.

(11,273 posts)it's a crime how far right this country has been pushed. AOC is "far left leaning" because she proposes that government actually do good things for people.

(99,711 posts)OTOH she calls herself a Democratic Socialist. You can want to use the government as an agent for good without being a Democratic Socialist. However Jennifer Rubin's overarching point is what plays in Brooklyn doesn't necessarily play in Columbus.

(7,542 posts)is how we're going to deal with all the foxes the cons have let into the henhouse. The new monkey-wrenchers are dismantling our nation's regulatory apparatus as we post. It's going to take decades to fix some of this stuff. We also need to take protective measures so this doesn't happen again.
These are a few things I would like to see Dems talking about other than a ginned up civil war...
A resolution...than any candidate for federal public office be required to show their personal income tax returns for the prior five years.
A resolution...that all fifty states be required under federal law to keep an intact paper record of all votes.
A resolution...that a two-thirds majority of both the House and Senate be required to remove federal park, monument, wilderness or wildlife preserve designation from any site.
A resolution...that all federal elections be publicly financed and the use of private funds be prohibited.
A resolution...bring back the Fairness Doctrine.
Feel free to comment with suggestions...

(2,510 posts)Those calling for more liberal stances and those calling saying only moderates can win are two sides of the same coin. As long as they are democrats and as long as they can win in their district, I don't care.

(463 posts)The primaries are a place to hash out the kinds of candidates and principles we want to promote. We should be able to do so without attacking Democratic primary opponents.
Once we have a nominee, it's full steam to November.
After November? We can start hashing this out again.
I'm giving myself the rest of the week to be pissed off about the treatment Ocasia-Cortez has received, but after that, I'm not going to get into it until after the midterms. It's counterproductive. Now isn't the time for the Drama of it All. Some people will need to curb the addiction for a few months if we're to succeed as a unified party.

(58,703 posts)I can't dictate to voters in NY who to vote for, and I'm reluctant to trust anybody who walks into my district and starts criticizing my rep based on some vacuous "principles" I should follow. Bernie and Ms OC are being a little cheeky, running around and challenging local reps. Their national bona fides are not that impressive, TBH.
I'm blessed to live in a blue state, and from last nights returns it looks like we will be getting even bluer this cycle.
I'm down with that.
