Derrick Johnson, the president of the NAACP, slammed President Trump as "a racist" in an interview ahead of the anniversary of the deadly white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Va.
I think, unfortunately, we are now looking at an individual in the White House serving the role as president whos not only made racist comments but hes sought and implemented racist policies, Johnson told Politico in the interview published Friday.
Accusations of racism have dogged Trump throughout his presidency and his 2016 White House campaign, which he launched with a speech calling undocumented immigrants "rapists" and other criminals.
Trump received bipartisan criticism for his response to the Charlottesville rally in 2017, during which he said "both sides" white nationalists and counterprotesters were to blame for the violence.
Trump also faced blowback for dismissing African and some Central American nations as "shithole countries" in an Oval Office meeting earlier this year.
Johnson said that "anytime you have someone serving the role as commander in chief of this country characterizing other nations as shithole nations,' seeking to undermine any policy of his predecessor, not because its good policy but because it was his predecessors policies, who established his political chops questioning the legitimacy of the prior president and whether or not he was born in this country, hes demonstrated both in words and in deeds and in policy implementations racist tendencies."
