The new moon of August comes on Saturday the 11th this year, perfectly timed to bring dark, moonless nights around the peak of the Perseid meteor shower. Indeed, 2018 is an excellent year to watch for these meteors; such moonless-sky conditions are ideal for observing the Perseids.
The annual Perseid meteor shower will peak on the new moon weekend of Aug. 11-13, 2018, giving observers worldwide the chance to see one of the best astronomical events of the year.
Earth should pass through the shower's richest part around 9 p.m. Eastern time on Sunday, Aug. 12 (0100 GMT on Aug. 13).
So, late that night into the predawn hours of Monday, Aug. 13, viewers in North America and Europe should have the best seats in the house. Late-summer campers should put their sleeping bags outside the tent to enjoy this "Old Faithful" of meteor showers

(58,785 posts)Wish I could send word to my husband camping with a grandson, but they're in a no-signal area.
Just rained but clearing here in north Georgia, so I went out and looked from the porch. Felt like room-temperature cream soup, but only saw a few stars. I looked, though, and we're projected to be through the weekend...!

(3,433 posts)Just like every single other meteor shower event for the past 5 years. I am not kidding. This summer has been extremely dry but this weekend... non stop rain.
It drives me crazy.
Cloud cover every damn August for YEARS. So frustrating.
I just took a peek outside and there's zero visibility for stars. Low clouds from horizon to horizon and thunderstorms predicted for tomorrow.
