The Police Athletic League in Jacksonville, Florida, has an inspirational slogan on the side of its building: Filling playgrounds, not prisons. But Bunmi Borisade told HuffPost she and her 11 year old son, Fatayi, went to a youth basketball game at the West 33rd Street JaxPAL gym on Aug. 4. After the game, Borisade was chatting with friends when she was approached by a little girl. This 6-year-old came up to me and said, Your son is being handcuffed for dribbling a basketball, Borisade said.
When she found him, Borisade said, he was standing next to a police car, surrounded by four deputies from the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office. My sons hands were handcuffed behind his back and he was in tears. Borisade said when she asked the officer who had taken her son into custody why he was in handcuffs, she was told, He was being disrespectful. She said the officer wouldnt explain what her son did.
Fatayis basketball coach, Lo Miller, told HuffPost he asked the officer what was going on. He said the deputy told him Fatayi had been bouncing a ball on the basketball court after the game, refused requests to stop and ran when confronted. Borisade said when she questioned her son about the incident, he told her he did not hear anyone tell him to stop dribbling the ball. He said the only thing he heard was someone yell, I know you hear me, boy.
He said he looked and when he saw this big man coming at him he got scared and ran, the mother said. He said the man grabbed him by the arm, pushed him up against a wall and said, Now youre going to see what it feels like to be arrested.
Christian Hancock, a spokesperson for the sheriffs office, told HuffPost the complaint has been received and is under review. As such, we are not at liberty to discuss active investigations,

(5 posts)Has "being disrespectful" been against the LAW?!? 1st amendment!
IF the kid REALLY WAS being "disrespectful" (and there was no cause for it) then MAYBE I could go along w/ cuffing him and looking for mom and/or dad, presenting the situation to THEM and then play acting out something to scare the kid into being more appropriate (ASSUMING he wasn't, which, imo, with the hair-trigger snowflakes on the forces I've seen of late, I am NOT conceding). But IF. But totally sounds like the hair trigger cop went off the rails... WHY wouldn't he explain to the mother what her child had done? My guess b/c even the dumb cop knew it was a complete snowflake over reaction on his part and was EMBARRASSED to say.
Sounds like the cop was annoyed by the sound of the ball and asked the kid to stop at a normal conversational level, then when the kid did not comply, likely because he never heard the jackhole... then the cop yelled about he knew he could hear him, made a move for the kid, scaring him, and the kid ran... then the cop got MORE inappropriate.
Can the cop, sue the police for false arrest and get a decent start on a college fund for the kid...

(9,114 posts)The kid's lawyer should cite Ingraham's advice, at the criminal hearing. Then the family should turn around and sue her, for getting their kid into trouble.

(5 posts)Also, tho, they need to sue for false arrest, because NO ONE is going to convict a KID for this if the story is even 50% accurate, then w/ THAT $ go after Ingraham. Then the kid can go to college AND law school (if he' wants to ). I really REALLY loathe her and think it is WAY past time she get sued into non-existence...

(50,942 posts)That every local and state law enforcement must follow. It should also include mandatory termination when found guilty. A national database of those terminated for just cause to prevent them from relocating to a different community and hired as a law enforcement officer.
