I have often said that most people are smart enough to know when they are being insulted, but not smart enough to realize they are being manipulated.

Trump's fan base puffed with outrage at being called deplorable. They are quick to take offense if any politician suggests that they might need to take greater responsibility for their career choices or their educations or the conditions of their civic communities. Such a person is an elitist who is looking down on them when they are the "real" salt-of-the earth Americans who work hard.

However, if that politician is a white guy telling black people essentially the same thing, then he is a straight-shooter, and those people need to get themselves better educated and start contributing instead of sitting around complaining.
