You could hardly surround yourself with so many disreputable figures as the president has unless you opened a halfway house for felons. But his preference for the shady sort is what you’d expect of someone whose business career has been a chronicle of bankruptcy, bullying and deceit.

makes you wonder how our country went so wrong.

It is shrinking because even members of "the base" cannot believe he could be this "bad" in so many ways. This shrinking of the base is very gradual. It takes time for some (a small percentage) to see what the rest of use see. And because Trump is such a defiant and awful person, some of the base are seeing the light. Almost every day we have an interview or article of a Trump supporter seeing the light. Who know how many? No one know. But this seeing the light is real, and I believe that the base is really shrinking. (but slowly)
