...visibly steamed. Every street and building that had been absorbing heat all summer just steamed.

I made for the Smithsonian Museums, where they had climate controlled air conditioning -- but somehow I don't think the Nazis would think of that, nor do I think they would be terribly welcome if they took their nasty attitude with them.
