by Colby Hall | Aug 15th, 2018, 7:01 am
Donny Deutsch isnt just your standard Morning Joe contributor who joins in the daily chorus of criticism of President Donald Trump. Mr. Deutsch also happens to be a kindred spirit to Mr. Trump: they both grew up in Queens, benefited from their fathers family business, and both have become reality television fixtures (to varying successes.)
They both have travelled in the same social circles, so when Deutsch reveals insights into how the president is being handled while enjoying a working vacation at his Bedminster Country Club, its probably more reliably sourced than other cable news pundits.
During a segment discussing presidential approval ratings that seem glued to the low 40s, Deutsch painted a picture of a President so fragile that before he enters a room, Secret Service agents encourage guests to say positive things and pump Trump up, ultimately likening them to fluffers.
Deutsch said somebody told me at his country club in Bedminister and Trump was about to walk into the room and some of the Secret Service guys came up, when you see the president, say positive things, pump him up.
Fluffers in the room, in effect, he added.
For those unfamiliar with the term fluffer Wikipedia defines this role as a person employed to keep a male porn performers penis erect on the set. Deutsch immediately recognized his strange comparison, and in a self-aware moment interrupted himself with, Oh just said that word. Didnt I. He then clarified that the fluffer term was meant metaphorically, of course.
He finished his point, proclaiming that Donald Trump is at the point hes so fragile and cannot ever, ever be in any interaction, any exchange in any room thats just not pure lionization, canonization, and it defies any left brain logic.

(2,596 posts)I don't doubt it at all. It's possible that when Keith Schiller was at the WH after Shitler's initial installation, he "auditioned" or at least spoke with the secret service agents before they were selected to be this worthless POS's bodyguards. You have to know that the idiot-in-chief would never have accepted just anyone. Schiller would have known just exactly the kind of person Shitler would let inside any place he planned to spend any time. I've been of the opinion (and I'm not informed on the protocol for selection to the POTUS's protection contingent) that they guys who form this group may have volunteered for that duty.
Trumps an idiot if he chose these guys for any reason other than being the best in the world at getting you not shot... but that wouldn't surprise me I guess he hires clowns for everything else...

(95 posts)To do that, their protectee needs to trust them. If they have to stroke his ego to maintain that trust, then it is their job.
I think, in general, members of the Secret Service are intelligent & professional enough to do that job without being swayed by his insecurities & megalomania.

(2,596 posts)That's a critical point you make. His psychological condition is, and has, the potential to endanger their own lives every bit as much as his, so it would be in their own self-interest to maintain professional decorum even if he has to be patted on the head or have his hand held before blustering into a room of potential threats. Their careers and lives are on the firing line, literally. Frankly, there'd be no way I'd get within a thousand miles of protective duty for this orange blob. No amount of hazardous duty pay would be enough to induce me to do it. I would have had to resign.

(7,530 posts)I mean...keeping the phresident safe means keeping him in a mood where he isn't going to provoke anyone, sure.
But yeah. They shouldn't need to be doing that for a grown-up human.

(6,212 posts)I don't think it should be the job of the Secret Service to be "Fluffers" for any president, they are supposed to be protecting him from physical harm not obliging a sick narcissist.

(9,426 posts)His constant vacations, tweets, golfing. WHEN does he actually do any work? No way would I vow to protect his orange ass, my life is worth more than his. Same goes for his grifting "kids" who all think they are special.

(82,849 posts)When was the last time you saw a concerted media effort to complain about the fact that Trump has conducted one, just one, solo press conference during his presidency? They're protecting him and fluffing him every bit as much as the Secret Service allegedly is.

(13,571 posts)Every day I see the courageous men and women of our watchdog press busting their butts to get the news and get it to the people. It is only that press corps standing between we people and tyranny right now -- the Fourth Estate. The Constitutional check on executive power known as Congress has abdicated its oath to the Constitution.
And so people like AP's Jonathan Lemire ask their questions while Putin stares him down. Lemire, driving the news, putting the president on the record. And tomorrow, more than two hundred newspapers will print their individual editorials against Trump's attack on the First Amendment.
I suggest you get out more. Look around. And yes, I'm pissed.

(315 posts)The secret service (as in any law enforcement institution) has its share of employees with frat-boy mentalities.
If this report is true, ethical officers who take their jobs seriously are being sidelined for flunkies and flatterers of the orange emperor with no clothes.
The Inspector General's office should investigate this report of unprofessional behavior.

(14,974 posts)honestly some of this could just be them trying to make their job easier. They need him to cooperate with their security precautions, for one thing, and also they probably don't like being abused in the workplace any more than the next person (and we know Trump is generally abusive, esp. when upset). If they can manipulate Trump into being in a better mood, it is probably easier to get through the day.

(6,799 posts)does that type of nonsense for Mr. Trump. They protect him. They do not pimp for him. Donnie Deutsch comes from the same playground as Trump. He is brash and full of fluff himself. Take what he says with some skepticism.
