By DAVID BADASH AUGUST 21, 2018 1:37 PM
Senator Susan Collins, a Republican from Maine, has just announced Trump Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh told her Tuesday he agrees Roe v. Wade is settled law. Kavanaugh was chosen by The Heritage Foundation as one of about two dozen judges who will overturn the ruling that found women have a right to choose to have an abortion.
PBS NewsHour correspondent Lisa Desjardins breaks the news:

Collins, who says she is pro-choice, has a record of being both an occasional swing vote for Democrats and a very gullible conservative. With this statement she has just signaled Judge Kavanaugh may get her vote.
Sen. Collins earned extreme anger from Democrats last year after she voted for Trump's tax cuts for the rich bill, saying Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell gave her "ironclad" assurances he would pass legislation to stabilize ObamaCare premiums and forgo a $25 billion cut to Medicare. That legislation never even came to the floor.
Kavanaugh has a long history that Republicans are closely guarding, one that Democrats believe would not only expose his extremist leanings, but one that could expose him as having committed perjury during his 2006 confirmation hearings.
On social media some are attacking Collins:

(1,156 posts)She never acts as an independent and she is a total wishy washy fraud. And a willful enabler of the endlessly abominable policies of the KGOP. Vote her out in her next re-election campaign.

(58,785 posts)almost entirely for over 2 decades now, a few exceptions for situations that might have cost her her seat. She still postures as a moderate (exactly like this situation), but everyone who wouldn't vote as required, hard-core social conservative/pro wealthy, in order to be allowed to stay was purged from office a long time ago.
We all know that if it comes down to her she'll vote to confirm this ruthless, unprincipled, anti- individual rights, pro government and business, strongly fascist-leaning bastard. And thus this charade.

(58,785 posts)Senator Collins is extremely practiced in the politics of betrayal is the useful idiot. If she has a latent shred of honor buried somewhere in her, THIS would be the time for her to stand up for her nation against fascism.
Her absurd pretense of believing Kavanaugh would not overset Roe v Wade is an appalling suggestion otherwise, though.

(4,723 posts)I'm sure she has enjoyed all the attention she has gotten from her little act of being unsure. In a way, legislators like her are worse than their louder and more obnoxious counterparts. At least with them, you always know where they stand. With people like Susan Collins you never know what way the wind is going to blow.
