A judge in Washington on Wednesday set a Sept. 17 trial date for former Trump campaign chief Paul Manafort on charges from special counsel Robert Mueller, including money laundering and failing to register as a foreign agent.

Federal prosecutors said in the indictment filed in Washington against Manafort that he secretly enlisted a group of former European politicians, including a former European chancellor to advocate on behalf of the pro-Russian faction Manafort represented in Ukraine.
Prosecutors have asserted that Manafort wired the unnamed officials more than 2 million euros from his offshore accounts and tried to cover up their work even while holding a senior role in Trump's campaign.
Manafort's case has been the first taken to trial by the special counsel's office. The trial in Washington will be the second by Mueller's office.

On edit, this juicy peach:
Manaforts charges for failing to register alone shocked the system. But Mueller added another unusual unusual charge: lying to the DOJ about his work in Ukraine five separate times, each of which carries a sentence of up to five years in prison if hes convicted.
That served as a wake-up call to current FARA registrants that they cant make errors that they know are errors, Rosenstein said. At least half a dozen current clients have called his boutique firm asking for help reviewing their prior filings to the DOJ. We take special care with our clients to make sure that what they do file is accurate, so its unusual to have that many inquiries in this short a time.

(46,051 posts)I've been impatient for something to move, but it appears Mueller's a helluva lot smarter than I am. He's got this nailed.

(32,020 posts)Unless you know something the prosecutor and judge doesn't know. This trial has nothing to do with the Russian investigation.

(23,946 posts)"For years, theres been an open secret in Washington power circles: Its highly profitable, if morally dubious, to secretly promote the interests of foreign governments, dictators, or oppressive regimes.
Then came Paul Manaforts indictment.
At the end of October, Trumps former campaign manager was charged for working for Ukraine for nearly a decade without telling the U.S. government. Special Counsel Bob Mueller, whos overseeing the Russia investigation, could also bring a similar case against former Trump adviser Mike Flynn for over half a million dollars worth of work he did as a foreign agent of Turkey, including writing an op-ed in strong support of the country on Election Day."
Pretty close to treason, poetry or not.
