(149,627 posts)I can't help wondering, though, why he pled guilty.

(17,442 posts)There will be a lot of speculation over the next few days, but I have to wonder if we will ever know why with certainty. There are lots of different pressures on him.

(14,972 posts)I'm not sure that is correct, but if it were, 3-5 yrs is a bargain if you acknowledge that you're caught dead to rights.
And that's all the prosecution offered him (so far as is known based on the court filings -- just a guilty plea in exchange for a sentencing recommendation). No cooperation agreement yet, but that cuts both ways -- he hasn't promised to squeal yet, but also prosecutors have a reservoir of felonies they have not yet promised not to charge him with.

(18,635 posts)His only choice as I see it was to plea bargain or clam up and hope for the best like Manafort. I think the feds had a slam dunk and he just told them what they already knew.

(14,972 posts)We had better get Cohen to testify in front of a grand jury just to be sure!!! Amirite?

(37,648 posts)He'll say "It was Hillary who directed that. She was SO AFRAID of the sympathy that the people would have for me, for being so UNFAIRLY accused of doing things that I didn't do, THOSE LIES...that she was afraid the people would come out by the millions to vote for me! Of course they came out by the millions, anyway...she didn't realize that was going to happen, anyway....."

(88 posts)I would have much preferred for him to have said "Donald Trump", not "a candidate for federal office." The latter gives us nothing. You may know, and I may know, to whom he was referring, but a trier of fact in a court proceeding doesn't. Guilt must be found beyond a reasonable doubt by a unanimous jury, and there ain't no way that burden is going to be met with what we have right now.

(58,785 posts)under oath by Cohen. The New York Times headline says Trump is implicated, with the entire top half of the print edition devoted to these developments. All DC analysts believe it is Trump. That should mean something to you.
As for why Trump was not named in this trial, they were not allowed to in that context. Apparently it's treated as something like a third-party statement to protect a person not on trial. HOWEVER, ex- prosecutors say if Cohen says the very same thing as a witness in a trial Trump would be named.

(884 posts)the criminal information actually goes on to note a particular date involved in the offenses, by which time "the candidate" had become President of the United States.
There's no getting around the very obvious fact that trump is implicated.

(2,850 posts)so the point is moot. "A candidate for federal office" can only refer to Donald Trump - any other conclusion would be absurd in light of the other information we have about Cohen's involvement with Trump and the election.

(62,276 posts)On Twitter, if you don't have a blue little trophy thingie, you're not credible, but this guy, looking at his history, is credible to me. He has 40k followers, tho, probably legit. I shouldn't let that blue tag / verified tag be so relevant.
This is 99% the front page, with, as you suggest, possible variation.
We are about to witness history.

(5,610 posts)A quibble with the NY Times, though. The sub headline reads "A One-Two Punch Puts Trump Back on His Heels".
Nothing puts Trump back on his heels. He has no conscience, he has no concern for anyone but himself. And he is not ever on the defensive; he will just continue to escalate his attacks. Fucking zombie.
