Davids Has Slight Lead Over Yoder, Democratic Poll Shows

A poll commissioned by Democrat Sharice Davids shows a close race between Davids and GOP Rep. Kevin Yoder in Kansas’ 3rd District.

Davids led Yoder by 3 points in an initial head to head matchup, garnering 46 percent to Yoder’s 43 percent. The libertarian candidate Chris Clemmons was at 4 percent with 7 percent undecided, according to the polling memo.

Yoder is a top Democratic target, representing the Kansas City suburbs in a district Hillary Clinton won by 3 points in 2016. Inside Elections with Nathan L. Gonzales rates the race Tilts Republican.

Davids, an attorney and former professional MMA fighter, won a competitive primary to take on Yoder. She had some help from EMILY’s List, which backs women candidates who support abortion rights. If elected she would be the first gay person to represent Kansas in Congress and among the first Native American women to serve in Congress. Davids also picked up an endorsement Tuesday from the group End Citizens United.

The pollsters with Global Strategy Group concluded that Davids did need to work her name I.D. Those surveyed had a 37 percent favorable opinion of her, while 15 percent had an unfavorable opinion. Yoder had a 44 percent favorability rating, compared to 46 percent unfavorability rating.

President Donald Trump and GOP gubernatorial nominee Kris Kobach were both unpopular among those surveyed in the poll. Fifty-nine percent had an unfavorable view of Trump and 53 percent had an unfavorable view of Kobach. Trump and Kobach had a 35 percent and 34 percent favorability rating respectively.

The poll surveyed 400 likely voters via live telephone interviews using a mix of mobile and landline phones. The poll was conducted from Aug. 13 to Aug. 15 and had a margin of error of 4.9 points.

Even though this is a poll commissioned by Democrats, this is still good news. There are still two and a half months to improve on this.
