He loves superlatives and he is one, only not best, greatest, smartest, etc.
By going after Cohen, Trump is making the man a more sympathetic person to people who previously could not stand him.

Because he did his dirty work for him and kept his mouth shut.
Of course, that doesn't include taping conversations with his client.

That's why such a high percentage of Cohen's papers were deemed not subject to attorney-client privilege.
Cohen was a fixer - as you said, he did the dirty work. No wonder Cohen thought it was important to record conversations with his client. It was for Choen's protection!
