I am Making A Stereotypical Observation On How Another Woman Dresses

I am female. I, like many other women, hate when women are judged by their looks, ect.,
But....
I just have to say something about Sarah Huckabee Sanders wardrobe.
She is a professional woman who dresses terrible and totally unprofessional.
Most women in her role usually dressed like professional women with a jacket and dress or top.
Huckabee Sanders dresses in flouncy, frilly things. In odd colors.
I'm sorry it sounds so unfeminist of me but, it drives me nuts.
I don't understand why they don't have someone help her with dressing as a professional woman in tailored pantsuits or skirts and dresses with a jacket.
It can even be cool looking. Just more like a professional would wear.
Am I being too picky or wrong?

As I noticed she was wearing that hideous black dress with the shoulder flounces yet again.

Since I have been watching The West Wing, I wondered why SHS doesn't wear a suit similar to what CJ wore for most of her working days. Then I realized that look would not work for SHS. She'd look like the SNL actress playing Sean Spicer!

Yeah, I know - mean girl snark, but it's true. SHS just doesn't have the build to look good in a suit. I know this from experience - I don't have the kind of build that looks good in a suit either (as a short, over weight busty woman).

Just not in a suit.

I have seen far too many women in business dress in what I consider non-business attire.

I'm just glad I never had to dress for other's consideration.

I ran a farm - jeans and tee shirts were and are my "business" attire. To go into town I would change into clean jeans and a tee shirt with a picture on it. Once when called for federal jury duty I wore my horse show clothes since I owned no dress suit or dresses. The judge seemed a little put off with a short dumpy woman dressed in good jeans, Western shirt with pearl buttons, big silver belt buckle, boots, and my good felt hat. Those were the dressiest clothes I owned. It did help convince him that I needed to be excused from jury duty since I was running a horse show the week of the trial and had no one I could delegate the job to.

Wed Aug 22, 2018, 05:17 PM
Aug 2018

I had to retire from the farm years ago. Now that most of my health issues are resolved I want to travel but I don't have clothes for dining out or going to shows, etc. Next year we're taking a cruise to the UK, spending three months there and cruising back. But I have nothing to wear to dinner or to any of the onboard shows. I have no clothes to wear in the cities we will visit.

While jeans and tee shirts are most comfortable, in my late sixties I think I need to learn to dress a little nicer. Now I have the money to but I haven't been able to find the styles I want to wear. I will either have to make my own or hire a seamstress!

80. There's some good advice in this thread...
Wed Aug 22, 2018, 06:05 PM
Aug 2018

In a downthread post I shared an experience I had watching a skilled seamstress prepare to alter an off the rack party dress for a high school girl.

Personally, I plan to never sew clothing from scratch again, as I long ago lost the interest, skill, and manual dexterity (I'll be 71 shortly). But that's just me -- I have a friend my age who is in the Fiber Arts Guild and amazingly artistic.

In my life I have moved from office work (suits) to appointed county commissions (flowy knits from a travel line) to complete retirement. I had to figure out what to do when I gained a bunch of weight (pretty overblouses with matching scarves, trying to distract from my tummy). Last year I moved to a new town and my best friend is my SIL that spends her time tending her garden and making stained glass, with jeans and t-shirts appropriate to those activities. (I love her husband, but he does their laundry by stuffing absolutely everything into one load and hitting the hot water button. Sorry, but I'd kill him.) I'm trying to find a new level. Funny how that works.

And travel... Has always been a challenge because I lived for years in Hawai'i and now for decades in SoCal, where fall and winter climates are nothing like the rest of the country.

Anyway, you will figure it out, and I know you will have many happy travels, dinners, dances, and theater engagements.

I live in a big city but still find the best clothes online. I used to be a jeans wearing person awhile back and never ever wear heels since I am the biggest klutz ever. Try to look for some flattering A-line or maxi dresses that are flowing dresses. These are extremely comfortable and feminine looking. Plus these dress styles look amazing with boots (any type of boots).

107. I never wear dresses or skirts
Thu Aug 23, 2018, 12:16 PM

I feel undressed, as if I were walking around in my nightshirt!

I'm now 5'4" (I was 5'3" until I got my knees replaced - now that I am no longer bowlegged I am an inch taller!) and very obese. For the last twenty years every time I start losing weight another health issue pops up. I've had thirteen major operations since 2001 and am now looking at having one on my back so I can walk around again. After my heart valve replacement last fall I lost 27 pounds - since my back problem got worse I gained back half of that.

I'd like to go more flowing in my style but I have to fight the years of running the farm. When working with heavy equipment you do NOT want loose clothing so it feels dangerous to wear flowy stuff.

The other thing I have to fight is never wearing artificial fibers. I am most comfortable in cotton or linen. The feel of polyester and other fake stuff irritates me. While I have found some neat flowy jackets and tops, they are not comfortable since they are made of rayon or polyester.

That's why I am thinking of making my own stuff or getting someone to do it for me. I can find cotton blend knits that would drape nicely and not have that slithery feel of the artificial fibers. I just need to keep looking I guess!

They tend to have more of a designer look than "off the rack at Macy's Business look", and have to be tailored, with drape collars, diagonal lines, and venting in the right places to make a more symmetrical shape, but they're out there.
Hell, even a bolero top with a simple solid color princess line dress would look nicer and more professional than "frills and flounces".

And I speak as someone who's currently shaped like a potato sack and looks like it. I love a gypsy/Stevie Nicks look, but I have to be careful wearing them or I look like a babushka without a scarf.

Since I see patterns for clothes I think I would wear but have no one to help me with fitting them. While I can sew, I have other things that I prefer doing so never get around to sewing clothes for myself.

Now that I am retired we will be traveling more and I would like to be able to dress up more than I ever have - if I had clothes that fit and I felt comfortable in. I should check at the local stores that sell cloth and see if I can find someone. All I need are a few really well fit slacks and some jackets in different styles and colors. Tops, I can find off the rack and add embroidery or lace if needed.

I believe she is a church girl and that's how all the church girls dressed when I was growing up in church. Show off without showing it off. Big hair and frills were in back in the 70s. (I graduated high school in 1981 and haven't been to a church service since)
She's from Arkansas right? That's close enough to Texas to probably be similar.

As a woman of a certain size myself, I agree. She makes BAD choices that give the appearance of not caring (and perhaps she doesn't.) I've also observed that the spouses of politicians (of both genders) have an obligation to make better choices in their dress, style, and overall appearance/grooming.

All I'm getting at here, is that one's appearance says a lot about them. I do not believe that Sanders fully understands what her appearance says about her.

I dress for comfort and luckily it suits being an unemployed grandma! My daughter is a professional and she dresses very nice.

I tried to watch the video of SHS and her dress was very distracting. It looked like something that maybe I would have liked to put on my Barbie doll back in the late 60s but then would have taken off (as hard as that was sometimes) because it is just goofy as clothing.

But it was when she started quoting the Bible that I couldn't watch anymore. She was not in church. Even for church that outfit would not be fitting.

Now it is solid colors but still there are flouncy sleeves or something else little girlish.

She gave up the Shirley Temple curls and extreme eye make.

I agree a nice jacket over a tailored blouse would help a lot.

She was the only daughter of Mike Huckabee, a fire and brimstone kinda TV preacher, and growing up in Arkansas would only cement her fundamentalist fashion sense as a good, god fearing, modest christian handmaid.

She makes good money and can well afford to hire an assistant to see that she looks as best as she can, but she doesn't so she thinks she looks great. Remember her bizarro 'smokey eye', she thought she was beautiful in that clown makeup. Her clothing choices probably come from some christian clothing catalog or some little modesty store in her hometown where all the women are wearing similar styles. In her eyes they are the fashion leaders of the community.

In my working life I wanted to look professional and I had a tiny fraction of the salary Sarah gets. I shopped sales and created a virtually timeless wardrobe over the years. I accessorized with scarves.

I had to teach myself, no biggy. The thing is, you can learn. From books, even. In giving thought to what would flatter my figure type, I also gave thought to what would flatter others. Sarah's wardrobe drives me crazy, in the few moments she's on my tv screen before I change the channel. I was shocked to learn she is only in her mid-30s -- I thought she was almost 20 years older. I have never seen a grown woman wear a black polyester double knit dress with shoulder frills.

She can, with her salary and in her line of very public job, get a wardrobe consultant, buy good stuff off the rack, and have it tailored to flatter her figure type. I watched it done once while waiting at a tailor's. A young woman, girl really, brought in a pretty summer party dress. She was quite chubby, and when she came out of the dressing room in her dress I thought (being an off the rack person myself) it fitted fine. Then the seamstress went to work with her pins, and the girl and the dress were just transformed. It almost brought tears to my eyes it was such a beautiful thing to watch. (All I needed was a pair of slacks hemmed because I was not sure I could manage that particular fabric myself. Never been back.)

The point is she lies all day and is subverting democracy.

Whether she does that in a thong bikini or a pinstriped suit, she is still doing it. So why waste oxygen on anything else?

And I say this as a woman in a professional career who refuses to spend the exorbitant amount of time and money that society dictates women spend in order to look acceptable and be taken seriously in that career - please just stop. The instincts making you qualify your OP four times are correct. Just stop.

Some, in the communications field, use bold colors and textures to command attention. What's "professional" in one career may not always translate in another. You also may be showing a bit of a generational tilt in your distaste for her clothing choices. You clearly have a certain set of expectations, from your own experiences, as to what you deem to be professional attire. It seems to be a popular opinion among those of a certain age and background.
Here are a few examples of modern professional wear from a plus sized boutique......

Of all the things 45's mouth piece does, how she chooses to dress herself should not be an issue. This is small.

I shunned suits. I liked to wear dresses. I like to be feminine and I didn't understand why we had to dress like men to be considered professional. I don't think I even wore pants once. I feel like we need to wear what makes us feel good. Also, I have always considered myself a raging feminist.

Her dress style is abysmal. She looks like she's going to some Harvest Moon hayride thing. Someone should mention the words "business suit" to her, quick, before she dresses like she's on psilocybin again!

And what's with her quoting biblical stuff? Not all who listen are Judeo-American. Seems like she excluded a large part of our citizenry with that one!

whose "style" has yet to be discovered..

The Correspondents' dinner did have one positive outcome. No more super smoky eyes

I often had the same issues with Hillary and her boxy too-long-jackets suits.

women who have access to money and do not hire stylists are doing themselves a great disservice.

MOST women do not really know what flatters them and their body style.

and of course "professional" styling is another whole thing.. party dresses, cocktail dresses, beach wear, 8th grade school dance wear etc are NOT acceptable/appropriate..

It looked like a 1980's prom dress from the little bit I saw of her behind the podium. The big frills coming off the shoulders were distracting. Maybe that's the point. She wants to distract and bait people into criticizing her clothing choices so she can whine and act like a victim as she did at the WHCD.

There are hucksters selling books about it, yes! (Remember, Susan Bickler?) But they don't actually teach this stuff in B school.

Besides, you really think SHS paid attention in class. Another silverspoon with connections, she knew she was never actually going to have to know anything.

I think she's actually an expert at mirroring. Thanks to a combination of the handlers, including Trump, selecting her and her own innate country style. What better way to appeal to a trump voter than to wear a dress that looks like one they have in their own closet?

Like i said, i did have that book by Bixler given to me at work, when i was already the best dressed guy in R&D. A little too GQ for some i suppose, but i hardly needed a book on how to dress nicely. It was pop psychology nonsense. (Think Stephen Covey, but about appearance.)

So, we're agreeing but i'm quite certain that other than someone teaching a B school telling someone (say in tech but looking for management) something like "Dress for your next job." they don't actually have classes on that.

I buy the "dress they have in their own closet." It's probably one of the ways that a bunch of snobbish, elitists got 60 million people to believe that this gang actually cared a whit about the average person.

It's a toned-down version of the Duggar girls' Pioneer Frump look. She's a good Christian woman wearing outfits that are stereotypically feminine (e.g., ruffles at the neckline) without being even slightly sexy. It's a style that also reminds me of the costumes worn in the Monty Python drag skits.
