"I was struck last night by a comment that I heard made by Speaker Ryan, where he called this repeal bill 'an act of mercy.' With all due respect to our speaker, he and I must have read different Scripture The one I read calls on us to feed the hungry, to clothe the naked, to shelter the homeless, and to comfort the sick. It reminds us that we are judged not by how we treat the powerful, but by how we care for the least among us. There is no mercy in a system that makes health care a luxury. There is no mercy in a country that turns their back on those most in need of protection: the elderly, the poor, the sick, and the suffering. There is no mercy in a cold shoulder to the mentally ill. This is not an act of mercy. It is an act of malice."

(2,574 posts)There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year olds life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs." ascribed to John Rogers
I found Tolkien around the same time. I take it Ryan was not as fortunate.

(561 posts)He is on the wrong side of the issue with pot legalization & that's a biggie
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)I don't use one issue or else litmus tests to evaluate the suitability of a democratic officeholder it aspirant. This coming from a person who has voted allow marijuana for medical use, and WILL vote to both decriminalize it or make it legal, whichever one come before me in Florida.
SkyDancer
(561 posts)I can't vote for someone in a primary who is against the very thing which helps me on a daily basis.
Legalized weed will be a HUGE issue come 2020 and will be a defining factor among candidates. Thankfully most on our side support it.
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)I also support a lot of other Democratic Party policy initiatives, that was my point. I live in Florida, we finally got medical marijuana. Up next, I hope is decriminalization or outright legalization, both of which I support.
Crutchez_CuiBono
(7,725 posts)Shouldve been de-criminalized about 1979 w Jimmy Carter. YEARS of jail-time done bc of this stupid law. Kids barred from colleges etc.
SkyDancer
(561 posts)At this juncture if you oppose weed legalization you basically are saying people should be locked up for it and that impacts millions of POC.

(3,479 posts)Joe Kennedy III was pointing the hypocrisy of these supposedly devout Republicans. He wasn't pushing religion.
Crutchez_CuiBono
(7,725 posts)I didnt think he was pushing a religion...but it sure was dripping w one. I get his message. MY point was he was using religion to try to make repubs feel guilty about what they are doing...they dont care about the bible...until they(the gop) want you to behave while they rob you or rape you.
Crutchez_CuiBono
(7,725 posts)read and could expound from those readings. I just dont remember too many bible verses coming from jfk...might be there, i just dont remember them.

(2,738 posts)By bad theology I mean beliefs that contradict the teachings of Jesus, and good theology is consistent with Christ's teachings.
For people who claim to be Christians but don't follow Jesus, it's the feedback of those who do know and follow him that is most likely to cause those holding bad theological beliefs to rethink. And if not them, then maybe those who have just leaned in that direction will hear the true words and turn away from it.
The Talibangelicals' version needs to be countered by those who actually try to do as Jesus would have done. The media spends almost all their time on the former.
