Duncan Hunter, the Republican congressman who was indicted Tuesday for illegally spending more than $250,000 in campaign funds on personal expensesincluding family vacations and tickets to Irish dance show Riverdancetold an ABC affiliate station in San Diego on Wednesday that he is a victim of the new Department of Justice and the Democrats arm of law enforcement.
Its happening with [President Donald] Trump and its happening with me, he told 10News before embarking on a fishing trip with a veterans group. Were going to fight through it and win and the people get to vote in November I think theyve used every dirty trick in the book, so itll go to court when they want it to.
Its politically motivated, he said. Its the last chance they could do this before the election. This is how they want to win the election. Its easier doing this than actually running for office.
Here are some of the wildest purchases the Hunters made with campaign funds, according to the indictment:
A plane ticket to fly a family members rabbit to Washington, DC, for vacation, first reported in early 2017
A $14,000 family trip to Italy for Thanksgiving in 2015. Hunter tried to arrange a tour of a naval base during the trip in an attempt to justify using campaign money. When he learned that a tour wouldnt be possible, Hunter allegedly told his chief of staff, Tell the Navy to go f themselves.
More than $26,600 in family vacation expenses between 2011 and 2015
More than $3,300 worth of fast food
Tobacco
A nearly $2,000 ticket for a Pittsburgh Steelers game
Video games, a purchase which the Hunters later reported as fraudulent to the Federal Election Commission
Tickets to the show Riverdance
School lunches for their children

(182,826 posts)Rep. Duncan Hunter used campaign funds to pay for $600 of airline fees to fly a pet rabbit, one of the more colorful expenses to surface in an ongoing review of his practices.

(62,276 posts)And so is his wife. I spent an hour reading that indictment. They were using the campaign coffers as a personal expense account. And they have documented the wife covering stuff up when the treasurer asked questions.
Hat tip to criminals who use their campaign finances for a slush fund: you need to have a corrupt treasurer.

(62,276 posts)Dude digging his own hole. You can't fucking say that you're at a football game to raise funds from someone. You are there watching the football game. Even if they discussed raising funds it would still be inappropriate to do it there. There's a reason you have fund raiser dinners. You're eating, sure, but you're sitting around talking, not doing something else.

(100,079 posts)I have never, not once, ever paid $2,000 for a single ticket. And the more he keeps justifying it the bigger hole he digs.

(62,276 posts)They were just looking over rudimentary campaign filings and the video games stood out to them (since the FEC was shocked that they would so openly and blatantly say "to be reimbursed" on the filing). So the reporter went through every damn filing and found everything. She pretty much handed a free case to the DOJ.
This is fascinating: http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/visuals/100729586-132.html
This is why I hate demonizing the press. There are a lot of good people in the press. The talking heads on network TV are not the end all.

That was an incredible comeback from that reporter.

(62,276 posts)He's the one who coined the whole "deep state" meme and it's being used a lot by these idiots.
Nevermind a reporter merely made a phone call to random "food venders" only to find out that the "food for campaign" was actually a gift shop in Disneyland that didn't even have food except for like PEZ dispensers, etc.
