The Mexican immigrant accused of murdering University of Iowa student Mollie Tibbetts used another person's name and identification to get a job on a family farm owned by a prominent Iowa Republican, the owners of the business said Wednesday.
The revelation came after murder suspect Cristhian Bahena Rivera made his first court appearance and was ordered held on $5 million cash bond.
"What we learned in the last 24 hours was that our employee was not who he said he was," Dane Lang told reporters gathered at Yarrabee Farms in Brooklyn, Iowa.
Lang co-owns the farm with his father, Craig Lang, who is a former GOP candidate for the states agriculture secretary. He said he knows Rivera by a different name which he declined to divulge.

(9,291 posts)If you didn't hire him, he wouldn't have killed anyone in Iowa. No due diligence. Like rich farmers ever do. Heads up local communities.
Same thing happens in the summertime in resort areas, no Americans work anywhere.

(16,311 posts)I had to term an employee because someone else using that SSN owed child support in another state. I was contacted in order to garnish wages.
That farm was not using the e-verify system as earlier reported, I think it's still optional, don't know for how many more years.

(62,270 posts)I'm sure the entire farm is going to be under scrutiny. They very likely go out of their way to help the undocumented people get on the payroll and they have set up standard go to replies for things of this nature.

Looks like that owner got a year in prison: https://www.azcentral.com/story/news/local/phoenix/2014/11/21/dannys-car-wash-sentence-abrk/19370181/

If they have been gaming the system the state will find out.
I wouldn't want to be them right now.

(2,340 posts)Employs will pass the e-verify check. However if one were to check on the status of all his employees one would probably find they are all undocumented using falsified records. The employer is aware that he is using undocumented workers who are in the country illegally. How did Rivera get to Brooklyn Iowa to apply for this job. Does Lang use jobbers to bring bus loads of undocumented workers to the farm? Probably
