Poll closures in mostly black Georgia county galvanizes civil rights groups across USA

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/elections/2018/08/22/midterms-civil-rights-groups-fight-georgia-poll-closure-plans/1065099002/

WASHINGTON – Civil rights groups knocked on doors Wednesday, held a rally and collected signatures to stop the closure of several polling sites in a predominately black county in Georgia.

The effort has galvanized national civil rights and voting rights groups aiming to block attempts to suppress minority voter turnout there and in other states ahead of critical midterm elections.

“It’s very disruptive and very concerning,” said Andrea Young, executive director the ACLU of Georgia. “We don’t want to see this kind of thing happening anywhere. We hope this is a warning … Things like this will not go unnoticed.”

The groups are fighting to stop a proposal the Randolph County Board of Elections and Registration is considering that would close seven of nine polling sites. The two-person board is scheduled to vote Friday.

----

The Georgia ACLU and some national voting rights groups, including the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, are threatening to take legal action if the board moves forward on the proposal to close sites.

“Randolph County's proposal to shutter polling sites, concocted under a veil of secrecy close to a potentially historic election in Georgia, smacks of racially motivated voter suppression," Kristen Clarke, president and executive director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, said in a statement.

"closures galvanizes"? No. The verb does not agree with the plural.

closures galvanize
or
closure galvanizes

Go with the first option. "Closures galvanize".

They were a critical turning point in the civil rights movement, and an inspiration to many of us in our formative years.
