The Republican Party of my parents' era would've stood up to this tyrant. (Original Post) eShirl Aug 2018 OP

This saying (or one similar to it) is still relevant today...instead of trying to bring all of us together, and perhaps in an imperfect way better all of our lives in some way, they have forsaken their once prominent role in American politics...too much money, and not enough accountability to the American taxpayer, and in addition, they only pay attention to their donors (1% of the 1% of the 1%) and the rest of us, who cares?

after all it was just 8 days or so before Nixon resigned that the GOP Senators went to the WH and told him it was over.

Congressional types (Senate and Representatives) are followers not leaders. They theoretically follow what we want them to do and represent our interests. Now of course they more likely follow the directions given to them by big donors or whatever the polls are telling them which way the wind is blowing, but they rarely if ever lead on any topic.

in which case the GOP tried to ride it out for a couple of years before being forced to act. My guess is history is going to rhyme, here.

Trump is the 3rd Republican President elected under a cloud over foreign entanglements in their campaign in my life time.

Nixon - credible evidence there were connections working to scotch the peace negotiations in Vietnam.

Reagan - credible evidence that there were contacts who negotiated that the hostages not be released until after the election.

Trump - credible evidence of a deep connection to Russian criminal oligarchs and Putin.
