Walter Shaub @waltshaubI'm trying to limit what I say about non-ethics topics, but Trump just tweeted that he's worrying about white people in a foreign country (whose chief export until 24 years ago was horror stories about apartheid) and my blood is boiling.
South African Government @GovernmentZA
South Africa totally rejects this narrow perception which only seeks to divide our nation and reminds us of our colonial past. #landexpropriation @realDonaldTrump @PresidencyZA

From 1948 to 1994, the white minority in South Africa ruled under apartheid and denied basic rights to the black majority. From 1962 to 1990, they imprisoned Nelson Mandela. More than two decades later, whites are 8.9% of the population but still control 72% of private farmland.

(386 posts)It seems some folks are having a hard time accepting that racism/white supremacy is being dismantled brick by brick worldwide. Kudos to the SA government, they should remove every remaining vestige of this colonial plague in their country.

(58,785 posts)that's going to run amok butchering good white Christian Americans with machetes. You know, rapine, blood running in the streets?
It's about the midterms. GOTV. They MUST vote to stop us.

(58,785 posts)one way or the other, and so could the 24% of Americans who are still in the Republican Party. I mean, zero. It's a vehicle for hatemongering lies about massacres of white people by black.

(2,074 posts)The facts in South Africa are not as simple. The ANC is corrupt and the situation of the poor majority in the country has not improved significantly in the last 24 years - much of the blame belongs to the ANC. Farm murders are brutal and are certainly NOT "justice." The ANC government has seized thousands of farms that they have not redistributed, so the statistics as presented above are certainly skewed: it talks only of land in private hands, but neglects to mention how many farms are in government hands. That said, however, Afriforum and other white rightwing organizations in South Africa do not look at the realities in South Africa in a balanced way. And getting this rightwing US government involved is a seriously bad idea, since it will just further racialize and already racially fraught situation.

(386 posts)Maybe the land is being redistributed to the population as the ANC has stated, thus reducing the need to turn to violence, for basic human survival.

(86,005 posts)...representing this as just a matter of injustice against white farmers ignores the recent past history of government oppression of black residents, and the reality that over 70% of the land is still owned or held by white landowners who make up slightly over 8% of the population.

(2,074 posts)Whether taking land without compensation is either just or economically sound is an altogether different measure. Better to use tax payer money (much of which comes from whites, who still have a lot of wealth compared to people of color in SA) to compensate farmers fairly is a better idea than just taking the land. The individual farmer is not usually the one who stole land in the first place, and may have put a lot of money into developing the farm. Better to let the whole community that benefited pay a fair market share to buy the land and redistribute it, than to punish a few. Moreover, the statistic above refers only to privately owned land. The government owns a lot of land that they have not yet distributed - in part because there is need to train black farmers to take over the land. The last thing SA needs is to turn into Zimbabwe.

(2,074 posts)Decreased or not, farm murders are still a fact of life in South Africa, and they often take particularly brutal forms. I personally know farmers who live in fear behind electrified fences, and I have personally known people who were attacked and even murdered in farm attacks (including my great aunt who was raped and stabbed multiple time until dead by a group of teenagers when she was in her 70s). I also have personally known and loved people of color who were farm workers, and I have friends who are now highly educated professionals but whose parents were farm workers and domestic workers, and the stories of their families' struggles have touched me deeply. Some of my relatives in South Africa are deeply involved in community work there, and I myself was an activist against apartheid in my youth. I think I have a nuanced perspective - at least, I try my very best to have. That is why I know that the issues are REAL, and they are DIFFICULT, and South Africa does NOT need the interference of the Trumpers who are likely to only make things worse.

(2,074 posts)The crime rates in South Africa are very high, and too many people already look at it only in racial terms. Trump entering the fray will just strengthen that narrative.

(92,304 posts)ignored. Their stupidity and ignorance is mind boggling, and their coercive undermining of the the naive and vulnerable with their false equivalency bullshit helped encourage enough people NOT to vote for the Democratic nominee, and contributed to where we are today.
They need to be considered persona non grata. They are NOT Democrats, but anti-Democratic party, and that is evidenced by their lack of remorse from their actions
